EchoWitt and YoLink pre-purchase advice

I’ve searched the forums and found quite a bit of configuration advice, but I’m trying to stay one step ahead and ask for some pre-purchase advice before I start buying hardware.

My use case is at a vacation rental property. I’d like to integrate:

  • YoLink depth/water level sensors in both a creek and a lake
  • An EcoWitt weather station
  • Home Assistant dashboard visibility for guests on a screen in the kitchen
  • Remote access for me when I’m off-site, mainly so I can see weather conditions and monitor potential flooding conditions on both bodies of water

This is not a life-safety system, so I don’t need anything industrial-grade, highly redundant, or overly robust. It’s partly practical and partly “just because it would be useful and fun to have.” Internet is strong there.

My main questions are:

  1. Is EcoWitt generally considered one of the better weather station solutions for Home Assistant integration, or is there another brand/setup I should be looking at before I buy?

  2. For YoLink, I’m a little unsure which hub makes the most sense. They have a more expensive hub that mentions things like Matter integration and MQTT. I’ve done some reading on both, but I’m not sure whether I actually need those features for this use case.

  3. For a mostly remote-monitoring setup like this, would I be better off keeping it simple with the standard YoLink hub, or is there a good reason to spend more up front for the hub with Matter/MQTT support?

Any advice from people who have already integrated EcoWitt and/or YoLink with Home Assistant would be appreciated. I’d rather buy the right pieces the first time than discover later that I should have gone a different direction.

The Ecowitt integration works flawlessly with HA. I have no issues using my weather station on a dashboard and as a trigger for many automations. It has worked without fail. As far a Ecowitt Weather station and sensors, you will have to do some calibrations.

I put my Ecowitt weather station on the roof 3 years ago and never had to touch it since then. I had to restart the gateway maybe once or twice. Integration works fine.

The version of the YoLink hub with Matter/MQTT support enables it to communicate directly with HA locally, and not via the YoLink cloud services. With your use case of mostly remote access anyway, this isn't a huge benefit. Though theoretically, if YoLink were to ever cease or significantly change operations, the local hub could (probably?) continue to work.

I'm very happy with my YoLink devices. The range and reliability is excellent.

Thank you for the response. Yes, I agree. I already have a few YoLink devices and have been happy with them. I would probably expand my YoLink footprint even more if they had a desktop app and outdoor cameras.

Based on what you’re saying, it sounds like the Matter/MQTT hub may not be a huge benefit for me right now if I’m mostly using cloud access anyway, but it might still be worth considering if I want better Home Assistant integration or some amount of future-proofing.
