[Billing] Energietracker: The missing financial & billing companion for your Home Assistant energy data (Self-hosted, No DB)

Hi everyone,

Like most of you, I love the built-in Home Assistant Energy Dashboard. It is perfect for measuring real-time consumption, solar generation, and tracking what flows where.

However, when it came to the actual financial and billing side managing multiple complex utility contracts, historical price changes down to the exact day, sign-up bonuses, legal notice periods, and checking if the supplier’s annual bill is actually correct HA always felt a bit clunky to bend to that purpose.

That’s why I want to share an amazing open-source project by Bingerminger: Energietracker.

The philosophy is simple: Home Assistant measures — the Energietracker does the billing.

What it does (and answers)

Unlike pure telemetry tools, this is a financial settlement engine for your home utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water, District Heating, Wood Pellets, Heating Oil, and PV-Feed-in):

  • Will I get money back? It calculates your exact real-time balance per contract by calendar, giving you a precise expected bill and a suggested advance payment.
  • Is my gas bill right? It does a true mathematical bill check (m³ × volume correction factor × calorific value per section) exactly how suppliers calculate it.
  • Should I switch providers? It features a dedicated switch-decision module including notice deadlines, price structures from year two, and contract break-even points.
  • Used more, or just colder? It pulls local weather data via Open-Meteo to offer a true weather adjustment analysis using heating degree days.
  • Privacy & Tech Stack: It’s a super lightweight PHP 8.4 app built as a PWA (perfect for your phone). It uses no database (Flat-File / pure JSON), meaning zero database maintenance overhead and it’s extremely gentle on Raspberry Pi SD cards.

How it integrates with Home Assistant

You don’t lose the automated goodness of HA. The Energietracker comes with an open REST API. You can use a simple automated automation/shell command in Home Assistant to push your daily or monthly meter readings directly into the tracker, and let it handle the financial forecasting and analytics in the background.

Quick Start (Docker)

You can spin it up via Docker in seconds to try it with included sample data:

docker run -d --name energietracker -p 8080:80 \
  -v energietracker-data:/data \
  ghcr.io/bingerminger/energietracker:latest

The UI fully supports Internationalization (i18n) with multiple country profiles (UK, DE, AT, CH, NL, FR, ES, IT, PT) adjusting currencies, CO₂ factors, and regional heating models.
