You don’t, it’s not possible at the moment. It’s handled by the integration.
So you introduced a change to confuse the russians?
I didn’t introduce any change
I (just like Artur) are just contributors to HA.
The team or someone, i didn’t want to insult anybody.
You can also change the name of the entity using the frontend in the entity settings (the exception here are entities without unique_id, but those are pretty rare nowadays).
What integration does handle this?
Integrations that support entity translations, there’s a long list of them. I don’t know it off the top of my head.
I don’t have a problem right now. But i will try to summarize the thread and address potentially arising implications tomorrow.
Wouldn’t say so.
It displays the friendly name if it is set. But even it this cases it is not displaying the pure 1:1 friendly name, but ist stripping the beginning of the friendly name, if it is equal to the device name.
This is, what I don’t like. And from what I understand this is what the OP is mentioning as well.
If I set a friendly name on purpose. And if this contains the device name on purpose. And if it displays the friendly name if set. Then is should display the friendly name as the user set it and not only a part of it.
Yes! Exactly.
For me you are mixing two topics.
The one don’t want the auto naming building from device+entity if you don’t (!) set a manual friendly name. Fair enough. Here I agree, that the one and the other want different things.
The other, this thread, want just that the manual (!) friendly name is displayed.
However the auto naming is. If everyone could overrule it by manual friendly name and this is then really un-manipulated shown, boths camps have a solution. But currently there is no soltuion for for those who just want that the own manual ny purpose set name is displayed.
Yeah I don’t really care which as long as I can see which battery is which.
In the new update I have three Batteri in the childrens room, but which is which battery, now I need to read another column or two to find out which battery is which.
Which one is the sensor and which one is the cover for the left window and which is the cover for the right window?
So I need to add the column Device to be able to read something I could read in one go before.
You’ve removed the 90% of the text that indicated what the item was
Yes. Thats the problem.
Can you point me to the request / thread of this camp? Until now I’m only aware of those, who do not want, that die name is generated this way out of device and entitiy, but not that the name is not displayed as it is defined.
No, I don’t think that it is comparable.
“They” have the chance to display/make it how they want via renaming. Here in this thread is no way to have the whole name displayed as set.
If both have a solution, of course, than it would be comparable.
Whatever. The topic of this thread is, that is is not working for this case. And there is no work around in this case, if I want to have the device name in the beginning. Other than doing tricks with hidden or additional chars.
You mean to place an x infront of the name? Really?
I know what it’s doing. I directly explained it in the beginning if the thread already. It is how it worked already in the past on device pages, where it is o.k.
To avoid it, it is now only possible via hidden or additional chars, where the others just can strip their prefix without other tweaks. That’s what I said. If the name column would just show the friendly name, everyone would have the chance to have it as he wants in setting the friendly name.
I’m moving on because this is futile. Y’all can figure this out on your own
@petro , I love you man, but this is exhausting. “We” don’t care what algorithm is used to construct a DEFAULT name for entities. Explaining how the algorithm works over and over is not relative to what “we” want. If “they” are requesting a change to the algorithm, so be it! How the algorithm works should not affect me if I choose to override it with my own entity name. “We” just want our name to show IF we choose to override the default/generated name. Why give us the ability to override the default name if it an algorithm is going to change it? This makes no logical sense. Also, let’s not forget, this is a change that happened with the last release. It worked the way “we” want it to up until this latest release. “They” should be allowed to use their own name if the default name is not to their liking. This is what “we” have done.
Really? “They” want to override the default name with the ‘device name + whatever’ and then have the UI strip the device name back out? No, I believe they want the DEFAULT entity name to strip out the device name. Fine with me. I have no interest in the default name. I want my OVERRIDE name to show.
“We” are not going to be upset if how the algorithm comes up with the DEFAULT entity name is changed. “We” don’t care what the default name is. We just want: If we override the default entity name, that no algorithm changes it.
