Hi everyone,
I’ve been working on Eufy Mega Security, an open-source Home Assistant app and custom integration for Eufy cameras, especially the battery-powered models that do not provide a permanent RTSP stream.
The project started with a simple problem: Eufy cameras can generate useful motion, person-detection, and event-image data, but getting reliable live video and snapshots into Home Assistant I found surprisingly difficult - with sometimes three different projects needed just to get a camera feed. I just wanted something easy for myself, but it sorta ballooned - and was hard frikkin’ work trying to figure this out without using the excellent but now deprecated eufy-security-ws as a safety blanket!
Eufy Mega Security currently provides:
- Eufy camera entities in Home Assistant
- Motion and person binary sensors
- Last-recognized-person information when HomeBase provides it
- Retained event snapshots, so a sleeping battery camera can still show its last useful image
- On-demand live viewing
- Fresh snapshots and short recordings
- Push-driven updates rather than relying entirely on polling
The gateway talks to Eufy’s current Mega platform for authentication, device discovery, events, and key material. Live video uses Eufy’s native PPCS peer-to-peer camera transport.
It does not use the expiring Web Portal Access PIN, and it does not depend on eufy-security-client. The Eufy protocol code runs in a separate gateway service, while the Home Assistant integration stays focused on entities and the Home Assistant API.
So far I’ve been testing with:
- HomeBase 3
- Three EufyCam 2C battery cameras
- A video doorbell
- A wired T817L camera
This is still an early project, and Eufy’s protocols are undocumented and can change. Some cameras may complete the connection handshake but still fail to send video if they are asleep, out of battery, or affected by network conditions.
I’m looking for testers
If you have Eufy cameras, particularly models that are poorly supported by existing integrations, I’d love to hear how this behaves for you.
Useful test reports would include:
- Camera model
- Whether it is battery-powered or wired
- Whether it is connected through a HomeBase
- Whether motion events arrive
- Whether event snapshots appear
- Whether live view, fresh snapshots, and recordings work
- Any redacted gateway diagnostics
Please do not post Eufy passwords, verification codes, session files, or private account details.
I’m also looking for contributors
There is plenty of room for developers to help:
- Testing additional Eufy camera and HomeBase models
- Improving PPCS compatibility
- Adding protocol fixtures and regression tests
- Improving the Home Assistant camera experience
- Reviewing authentication and security boundaries
- Improving documentation and troubleshooting
- Helping make the Eufy client library useful outside Home Assistant
The repository includes a first-day developer guide explaining the architecture, Mega API, authentication flow, event-image formats, PPCS streaming, and the Home Assistant boundary.
If you have a camera that existing integrations struggle with, please give it a try and let me know what happens. Compatibility reports are especially valuable at this stage.
