Hey Home Assistant Community,
I hope it’s okay to post this here. I’m an MIT researcher, and I’ve been tinkering with a personal project that’s kind of… well, a bit niche, maybe? But I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and I was just wondering if anyone else shares this thought.
You know how in games like The Sims, you can see your entire house from a bird’s-eye view in 3D? I’ve been exploring the idea of automating how we could get that kind of 3D layout for our own actual homes. Like, what if you could essentially generate a model of your house just from some photos? My very early tests suggest it might be possible with around 10 pictures per room.
I’ve attached a couple of images – the scattered points are actually an early look at a 3D scan of my own house. The other picture is just a Sims house, to kind of illustrate what I mean by a “3D view.”
My hope would be to make this whole process fairly automated and, ideally, totally free. I’ve been thinking about how it could potentially integrate with things like Sweet Home 3D.
I guess I’m just putting it out there to see… does anyone else ever wish they had this kind of interactive 3D model of their own living space? Is this something that sounds even remotely interesting to you? Or is it just a weird thing I’m fixated on?
No pressure at all, just genuinely curious about your thoughts. If there’s a little bit of interest, it might encourage me to push this project further.
Thanks for humoring me!
