Every few hours, Home Assistant loses it's internet connection

Hi All,

Hoping you can help a bit of a noob

I have a Pi4, and for the last 3 years I have run HomeBridge on it, plus a few containers (including HA to experiment with). Everything worked beautifully and was super reliable. But as I was tiring of HomeKit’s automation limitations, I decided to make the leap to Home Assistant. So I flashed HAOS to an SD card (then restored a backup from the container version of HA, as I already named a load of devices and entities etc, to save time), plugged it in, and off to the races… or so I thought.

I’m loving HAOS, but at least once a day it loses internet connection. It is still accessible and responsive on my LAN (ethernet connection), but all my integrations and addons requiring the cloud fail (including the default HAOS ones like Weather and Sun). If I restart HAOS it’s fine again for a few hours. This is the only time I have seen this, no other devices have any issues. Nothing in my network has changed.

Is there any thing obvious, or known issues, I can try to resolve this?

I can post logs, but I’m not entirely sure what I’m looking for, or which logs to post.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I would start here: How to Troubleshoot Raspberry Pi Crashing.

And don’t skip the hardware bits - power and SD card issues are common.

It’s not crashing though, never has.

But power issues could affect the network / rj45 connection (loss of network connection). There could be a corruption on the SD card that causes intermittent issues (like loss of network).

The home-assistant.log and home-assistant.log.1 files may have more info - look there.

  • Settings → System → Logs

Note the three dots in the upper right and click on Show Raw Logs for more details. Also note in the upper right where you can select a dropdown list of which log to display (Home assistant Core, Supervisor, Host, etc.). Inspect those too to see if anything correlates to the time you lost network connection.

It’s only its internet connection that fails, it is still working locally on my lan fine.

Check the logs.

I got the same issue. Though running as a VM on Proxmox. Running fine for several years, and just now it started to drop internet connections. Found it by having my weather sensors becoming unavailable. Check the logs and the only thing I’ve yet to find is errors by not having internet.
