Extract the configurstion.yaml file from a full ha bsckup

Is there a way to just extract a single specific file, for instance the configuration.ysml file from a full ha backup using a Windows PC.

I tried using 7 zip but I never could drill down into the home assistant folder in the compressed backup. Is there some special software tool I need to install on the PC to do this?

Hi,

I'm not really looking to retire the file back into home assistant. I looking to just be able to view or copy the contents of script files or yaml files. So it's more about how to drill down to them and then opening them .

What I ran into when I tried to do this was I used seven zip and I drilled into the home assistant folder. But each time I did that there was another home assistant folder inside of that that wasn't marked as a.tar.

It also was identified as a file and not a folder.

So I would try renaming that file to be a tar and it was then identified as a compressed archive, I'd open that and I had the same problem one after another after another it seemed like no matter how far I went down through these levels I was always faced with another home assistant file that wasn't marked as a tar.

The configuration file is in homeassitsant/data. You can extract that and copy out whatever you want.

I never was able to do this. Thanks to everyone that said it should be possible to do from a windows 11 PC.

However has anyone successfully done this Using a windows 11 pc ?

If so what are all the exact steps?

Yes many people have done this many times. You do not need to rename anything. Just follow the previously provided instructions.

  1. Install 7zip or WinRAR.
  2. Download your backup.
  3. Open the backup with your chosen software.
  4. Open the homeassistant.tar.gz archive inside the backup.
  5. ** Open the homeassistant.tar archive inside homeassistant.tar.gz
  6. Open the data folder in the homeassistant.tar archive.
  7. Your configuration is here. Open files and copy what you need.

** Note: Step 5 is only required if using 7zip. WinRAR will do this automatically.

It should be noted that in order for this procedure to work, your backup needs to be Decrypted (all backups are encrypted by default). If the file you’re trying to extract is just pulled directly from the storage location (from the filesystem, NAS, OneDrive, etc.), then you won’t be able to extract it. But if you download your backup via your working Home Assistant instance, then it will decrypt it on the fly and you can extract it as described above.
