Failed to install Zooz ZEN71 light switch

I was unable to get the wires around the screws on the Zooz switch. You can see they are recessed. And the screws do not unscrew enough to fit the wires. Anyone have experience with this? I think I’m going to have to hire an electrician off of Thumbtack.

-Thanks

Push the wires into the holes and screw them down.

Push the screw head in while inserting the wires so the part that clamps will catch the wire.

Thanks. I thought at least one of the wires was a loop like the wire on the bottom. So you’re saying just one of wires would be inserted into the one of the two holes, then tightened down with the screw?

If you are not sure, this is the best idea ever…

It’s very simple, really. Screw the old switch back into the box, keep at least 6 feet away from it & call an electrician.

I know it sounds harsh, but if you’re offended it means you’re still alive. Seriously - if you don’t know how to wire this in, don’t try.

I was going to give more direction. But, both Sir_Goodenough and ShadowFist are exactly right.

The question is basic enough that I don’t want you to burn your house down!!!

Example, in the photo of the switch, on the top connection, turning the screw will tighten the wire, and in the bottom one will actually unwind it. Loose wires bring arcing, sparks, heat buildup, intermittent operations, brownouts ,and possible fire. The insulation on the wires looks nicked as well. Sleeving would help.

Eyelets with shrink insulation to cover the exposed wire at the wall switch or using the correct holes in your Zooz would be my next concern.

Yes, get a professional to do your wiring is my strong recommendation.

Having an electrician coming out tomorrow morning. $125. That was the lowest of 3 estimates, they all had a good rating at Thumbtack.

$125 for peace of mind that could possibly save your life sounds like very good value.
Best of luck with the software side of it.

Great! Watch them intently and learn

This should be a pretty simple install.

That part I’m looking forward too! I already have an Aqara FP1E setup in the bathroom that toggles the office light when I enter and leave the room.

Yes, I think I know what to do now but the existing switch had no labels on it indicating which wire was which. Except for the green screw of course. And the colors of the wires were confusing. Definitely going to take some pictures!

The electrician will check which wire is live and which is switched before they start connecting things to your Zooz. Get it wrong is an unacceptable risk we are glad you have eliminated by calling a professional.
