Failed to remove device entry, rejected by integration

I’ve just started with home Assistant about 2 weeks ago. Just my luck one of my zwave devices has just died DOA, no power nothing. When I went to remove it from Home Assistant I got the message “Failed to remove device entry, rejected by integration”. I tried disabling it and that didn’t allow me to remove it. Keeping in mind I’m brand new to HA, is there any easy way to get this removed from HA?

Removing a device from the Z-Wave network

  1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Devices & services.
  2. Select the Z-Wave integration. Then, select Configure.
  3. Select Remove device, then Start exclusion.
  • The Z-Wave controller is now in exclusion mode.
  1. Put the device you want to remove in exclusion mode. Refer to its manual how this is done.
  2. The UI should confirm that the device was removed and the device and entities will be removed from Home Assistant.

I did do steps 1 + 2

There is no “remove device option” that you refer to in step 3.

Also step 4 looks like thats not possible because the zwave device is bricked. Dead, a boat anchor at this point.

Looks like you clicked on CONFIGURE for a device, while the procedure wants you to click on CONFIGURE for the entire integration. If you follow step 1 and first part of step 2 exactly as written, you see a screen like this:

But you’re right that a dead device might not be excludable. Check the device manual for how to put it in exclusion mode and do it anyway, because sometimes (maybe most of the time) it actually fixes things.

On the device page, next to its CONFIGURE button, there’s a three-dot menu that also has a delete option, but this does NOT run the exclusion. Note that you cannot add the device back to your mesh until it has been through the Z-wave exclusion process.

I found under the integration configure area that after some time passed there was then an option to remove a failed device. I’m pretty sure that option was not there initially. I just looked again and after I use this option the option is no longer there.

I hope this might help any other lost and weary traveler…
