Feeling stupid -- where is Voice Assist?

Running 2023.2.3 supervisor 2023.01.1 os 9.5 on a HyperV VM, using a yaml config file and lovelace UI.

No voice assistant icon visible.

Installed Android Home Assistant mobile on Pixel 7, it runs fine (looks almost identical to my web version), no visible voice assistant. It shows as 2023.1.1-full so maybe too old (but it is what was in playstore as of today - do I need to be in the beta channel?)

Thought I might need a HA managed dashboard, so created one, and go to it, no voice assistant on top right.

All the docs seem to imply it just magically appears, I can not find any YAML for it, there doesn’t appear to be any integration to install or set up? It’s just supposed to be there.

It could be that my configuration is pretty old, and is still mostly yaml and lovelace based, but not finding any indication what to do.

Am I just missing something fundamental? Sadly the name “assist” makes searching for it specifically is a bit hard. :frowning:

I have no immediate use plan, I just wanted to experiment a bit.

Feel free to tell me RTFM but if so… which “M”?

Are you using default_config in your configuration.yaml? If not, add conversation:

That’s it.

Might be worth adding that to

https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/assist/

I see it now at the default_config section but did not think to look there.

Thank you!!

Please use the links at the bottom of the page:

It should also be added as one of the integrations to the default_config list:
