First setup - hassio.local domain not working

Hello,
I’ve just installed Home Assistant for the first time. I’ve installed it on my Raspberry Pi with the regular installation described here https://home-assistant.io/getting-started/

Seems that I cannot connect to the web interface via http://hassio.local:8123 but when putting my Pi’s IP instead of hassio.local it works.
Any idea why and how to solve this?

Thanks!

It’s not that unusual.

*.local is a bonjour/avahi broadcast. Sometimes your router will block bonjour broadcasts. Just use the IP address, or if you have the ability in your router to make custom DNS entries, you can set up the hostname.

I see. I didn’t find an option to set a custom DNS entry in the router configuration.
Is it possible maybe to change the domain name to something other than .local?

Thanks!

Hi, I just started with Home Assistant as well and had the same issue.
I dug into it a little and came away with the idea that my router might not support mDNS (multicast DNS), commonly used by things like Bonjour/avahi mentioned above.

Perhaps you’ll have better luck with your router.

As I don’t have the ability to make custom DNS entries I’ve given my Raspberry Pi a permanent IP on my router’s DHCP page.
