Fixed ip address for HA

Hi Guys
I have a ASUS router and want to add a fixed ip address for HA and besides the ip address it also has tbe option for host name and DNS address .
Is the host name homeassist ?
And i not sure where to find the DNS address,

You help please , thanks

You have two options for a static IP:

  1. Set it on the ASUS Web UI.
  2. Set it on Home Assistant to an IP address that won’t ever be assigned using DHCP. If you know what you’re doing, this can be most reliable.

It is likely simpler for you to set in Asus UI. Go to your router’s web UI (usually 192.168.50.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), log in, click the Client icon (a sidebar with clients should pop up), click Home Assistant (usually homeassistant) and set the desired IP in the box that pops up, then click Apply. Then you may want to restart Home Assistant and it should get the new IP.

Awesome thanks , what about the DNS address , it says optional

I’m not exactly sure what your worry regarding DNS is, but HA broadcast its DNS via mDNS, so whatever it’s IP is will be what homeassistant.local resolves to. You cannot change that name, AFAIK.

The funny thing is I am unable to connect to HA is i use Homeassistant.local or homeassistant, it only connects when i type the IP address in. I just installed a knew ASUS router, the router shows the name homessistant .
What roueter setting is causing this pls

I may be misunderstanding you here, but the hostname for HA can be set in Settings > System > Network > Hostname. What I set there is exactly what shows up in my routers UI and what I use to access HA. For consistency that is also what I named the VM hosting HA in ProxMox.

We don’t know which installation method OP used, and I should’ve clarified, because my own is HA Container, which doesn’t allow you to set the hostname via YAML or the UI (the IP, yes, but not the hostname, at least not AFAIK). For HAOS, sure, that might be the case – I’ve never used HAOS. For HA Container you probably can set it in the Docker file – I haven’t looked – but it’s not an HA setting in that case.

Your home assistant will be identified as “homeassistant” or “homeassistant.local” on your network. So any device that scans or knows your local network hostnsmes will return one of these as its hostname.
You already confirmed that your Asus router displays “homeassistant” for your homeassistant instance.

To access your homeassistant instance, you will either need to use the assigned IP or if you have one, url.

Currently you appear to be using its IP, and that works.
It seems you’re expecting to be able to use the hostname, which won’t work. (it’s just a name on the network) I suspect what you actually need would be a url which you can can define by other means, but these would be via reverse proxy, dns server or both.

It’s much easier to bookmark the IP you have, and use that.

I looked back at your original post. Are you trying to set a DNS entry for Home Assistant via your router’s settings? That shouldn’t be necessary, as HA already broadcasts an mDNS entry.

We still don’t know which HA version you’re running, and I have no idea how your ASUS router settings look, but DNS basics are: a hostname is an A record. You need to set that. Then you can point a CNAME to the A record. But you really don’t need any of this unless you want a specific CNAME for your HA. And don’t set homeassistant as a CNAME via your DNS, especially not if your suffix is .local. It will really mess up things.

Back to basics: what are you trying to do and why?
