Stepping back, if what you are trying to do is monitor when the device finishes the wash, monitoring the power consumption (rather than water flow) is the approach most people use.
hi, thanks for your hint - and yes, I already have shelly plugs for metering power but I still miss an option to meter water usage 
So measure the water usage once for your favorite washing programs from your main water meter. Use your power meter to detect the corresponding program and calculate water usage.
Good flowmeters are big and expensive. Bad flowmeters are inaccurate and can leak causing disaster.
