From HomeSeer to HomeAssistant

Passionate about home automation for over 40 years, I have used/configured several systems over time, including Crestron, Control 4, ELK, HAI, and others. For more than 15 years now, I have been using Homeseer (DIY). I am currently exploring options to change my setup, as unfortunately Homeseer no longer seems to be evolving, which could mean the end of this software that I loved very much—a situation I have experienced too often. My installation includes more than 150 physical devices and over 150 automation routines, across 8 operation interfaces on iPad or Windows 11 PC. I mainly use ZigBee Plus, Z-wave Plus, and Insteon communication drivers. I am currently seeking advice on:

  • The type of hardware equipment (Windows 11 PC, or Green ??), advantages and disadvantages
  • HAOS?
  • What type of human-machine interface software is popular and flexible, and would allow me to configure my control screens on both an iPad and a Windows PC with the same application? For HomeSeer, I used HStouch.
  • Recommendations for Zigbee Plus and Zwave Plus interfaces
  • Experience migrating from Homeseer to Home Assistant

Thank you JYA

Welcom. I made this switch years ago. Best choice ever. Migrating your automations is not possible. You have to create those again and that is a good thing. Make a list, screenshots or whatever of your devices and automations for reference when rebuilding. That’s it. Excellent choice for zigbee and zwave adapters. ZHA intergration for zigbee was my first choice but i had trouble to get older hardware working. Is more limiting then zigbee2mqtt. Since i have also mqtt running i made the switch to z2m and for me it works much better. Everything that i throw at it is recognized. The least hassle is running HAOS on a miniPC. Just follow the instructions and you will be okay. The requierments for HA are very modest. HAOS includes also the OS btw. About hmi. When running HS i had a few of them but now none. No more hours wasting with HSTouch. No need here because the house reacts on my behavoir, sensors and i use voice from time to time. But any cheap tablet with a browser will do to show you your dashboards made (and the defaults) in HA. On the phone there is the excellent HA companion app.
