Fuel Flow Meter?

I’ve found lots of threads talking about water flow meters. I’d like something similar for my heating oil fuel flow. And if it worked for home heating oil, presumably I could do something similar with the diesel lines on my boat when I start playing with HA there.

The problem always comes down to finding the hardware.

Suggestions welcome!

Hello Tom,

do you have any solution so far?
I have an oil heating and would like to try measuring flow in the tiny tube from outside.

Best regards,
Stefan

Nothing yet. I currently use the run time of the burner to estimate fuel use, which is quite accurate. For a single line with no return, there are off-the-shelf fuel flow meters for vehicles, but I haven’t tried them yet. So hard to know what hardware is good, and what will integrate easily with HA.

Any progress here? im also after installing an oil meter. i think an oval gear hall effect should work, but its picking the correct one!

No luck. Everything I’ve seen is either overly complex, or expensive, compared to just monitoring boiler run-time and keeping an eye on the tank gauge.

For a home boiler, run-time is pretty accurate. The burner nozzle is metered to produce a set flow rate, although some newer models have variable rates (and are computer-controlled, so there may be another option there.)

Thanks for that Tom. Im going to buy an oval gear hall effect and play with it. ill keep you informed.

Any results with the fuel flow sensor?

Hi Tom.

I actually never bothered because i decided to rip it out and fit an Air sourced heat pump. it going in im April.
