General Questions For Purchasing Decision

Hello. I’m shopping for software to manage indoor wifi cameras and have some questions to help me make a decision.

  1. Does Home Assistant android app require Google Play services for optimal functionality?
  2. Is Home Assistant a good option for my use case?
  3. Does Home Assistant cost anything to run? Monthly/Annually.
  4. Can I setup and manage wifi cameras entirely from the android app or does Home Assistant require a desktop environment for initial setup? If so is Home Assistant compatible with Linux?

It sounds more like you want an NVR. Home assistant has apps to do that (e.g. Frigate) but it is an automation system at heart.

No. Only a monthly expenditure of a small amount of time to keep it up to date. Also some remote access options (e.g. Nabu Casa) do charge a fee but there are free alternatives if you require remote access.

Your cameras will require some sort of setup that is performed outside Home Assistant (e.g. network settings, video encoding, motion detection zones etc…). You can probably do that from your mobile web browser. Depends on the camera.

Home assistant runs headless and is accessed via a web browser, so it is OS agnostic.

Often the quality of the alternative offered by HomeAssistant is higher, allows for older equipment to continue to work, allows for interoperability with different vendor solutions tied together for powerful integration and automation. Cashflow and profits are vital for vendors, whereas Open Source solutions can provide a viable free option.

You need to provide for internet access for updates. You need to have a robust network for your cameras and other devices to connect to the server, whether wired or wireless. You access your HomeAssistant server via a web browser or Companion app you run on your Android/Apple platform. Electricity costs to run everything are small, but ever present and ongoing 24/7/365. Your time is free if you are futzing around, tuning and updating constantly. If you need to pay somebody to do that for you, the support charges mount up. The learning curve is steep, rewarding, and oh-so-tempting - you’ll wonder where all the hours have gone! Most modern devices and software are designed to easily integrate, plug-and-pray and rosary beads optional, and should be recognised automatically. Matter is a recent industry standard innovation, requiring a one-off onboarding operation, most elegantly performed through a mobile device like your android phone with QR code scanning making it easy. Setting up monitoring, updates, customisation, automation involves a bit of mousing and typing, best remotely done from a desktop with keyboard and mouse and a web browser.
