Getting started with HA

Hi everyone,

I know it seems really a stupid question but given the fact is so stupid, nobody is talking about it :slightly_smiling_face:

I am new to home automation, I will recently have the opportunity to play a bit but I am wondering how the initial setup could look like, a lot of tutorial I saw before posting (so please don’t tell me to look in Google) have one breadboard connected to the RPI and that’s it, but in reality how I am able to connect all the devices I may have at home? What are the sensor I have to attach to the RPI if I want to automate the IKEA tradfri and use a voice recognition?

Thanks in advance

You don’t need any breadboards connected to a pi for home automation unless you are integrating stuff DIRECTLY on the pi.

It depends on the devices you have. Most of them will be zwave/zigbee/wifi, but it depends ENTIRELY on what devices you have.

You don’t need to physically attach anything to the pi but a network cable and power (monitor and keyboard if you need to troubleshoot). Everything uses the network or some variation.

The first step is to identify the devices that you want to integrate. Look up if there is an integration on the HA website. Also search the forums for that model/type of device and see how other people are communicating to it.

I’ve been using Home Assistant for a little over 3 years no. I don’t even own a breadboard…

Tradfri: Either a Tradfri hub or one of the many direct Zigbee integrations (with supported USB stick) - zha, deCONZ, Zigbee2MQTT.

Voice recognition: Both Google Home and Alexa are supported, along with other voice integrations.
