GlassHome: a dashboard with 70+ cards for Home Assistant

GlassHome is a local-first dashboard for Home Assistant. It runs on your hardware, talks to HA directly over WebSocket on your LAN, and is configured entirely in the UI.

The free version ships with 18 cards for most basic entities, like light, senso, weather, climate, multiple energy cards…

But GlassHome has an SDK and a CLI to develop and publish widgets. 53 cards/widgets have been added so far by the amazing community.

Just to name a few:

  • Room-oriented views: Room, Lights by Room, Climate Rooms, Covers by Room
  • Dial-style controls: Dial Thermostat, Dial Light, Dial Media
  • Security overview: Argus (one security score), Security, Openings
  • Everyday devices: Vacuum, Lawn Mower, Water Heater, Humidifier, Valve, Appliance
  • Calendar and planning: Janus (three layouts), Calendar, Daily Schedule, Todo
  • Utility: Internet Monitor, Nord Pool prices, Map Navigator floorplan, Canvas photo slideshow

Free vs PRO

Free is the whole dashboard: connect to Home Assistant, all 18 official cards, 7 themes light and dark, no account, no payment, no Internet nada.

PRO is $39.99 one-time (not a subscription, all updates included). It unlocks community cards from the Hub and the customization. This is to support the development of the project and keep it alive for years to come.

Okay so now that you are caught up to speed! What widget would you love to see next? Imagination is the limit.

I am here if anyone has questions  would love to answer them. Feedback is most welcome!!

I checked out the project and I really like the look and potential of GlassHome. However, I wanted to share some feedback regarding the pricing model, specifically the decision to gate community cards behind the PRO license.
As a supporter of the open-source philosophy, this approach doesn’t sit well with me. When creators in the community develop and share their custom cards for free, they do so to benefit everyone. Requiring users to pay a PRO license to access these community-made creations feels like monetization of other people’s free work and goodwill.

I understand that project development and maintaining a hub costs time and money, but charging for access to a community ecosystem feels like the wrong way to do it. I hope you will reconsider this part of the model.

Hey @Leon_Buitendam, Thank you so much for giving it a shot!

I really appreciate your constructive criticism. I also do understand how it looks from your point of view. I hope with time, more and more features will arrive and I can migrate the community widgets off to the free version. That is not a crazy idea at all, because that would probably mean more widgets for everyone. But understandably I need a way to sustain development right now, or the project would die before it got any chance to live.

I also have a great appreciation and relationship with all the widget developers. They are truly amazing people. GlassHome was going to be fully paid in the beginning. But it was actually the idea of one of the widget developers to make parts of it free. And everyone in the discord (including myself) agreed, so I delivered.

I suggest you think about it this way; buying PRO today, makes sure this project survives. And it’s for life. so win-win.
It’s still in the beginning, and every kind of help matters. Thank you again for your feedback! And you are always welcome to join the discord and raise your concerns!

So when is it ok to try and monetize a open platform and its community in its own forum ?
