Google home not working on iot network?

I use asus RT-AX86U Pro and it has a iot network wifi type. Ap isolation off and I’m not sure how it’s really different from a normal network as it does not have VLAN ID. I read somewhere that it receives some sort of packets so it is slightly safer than using the main network.

All my iot devices are on this network. I tried to move Google nest mini/hub/etc onto this network. It seemed to work for a bit and then not for work for a bit and so on.

Can the Google home app I can sometimes see the devices from home assistant and sometimes they’re all unavailable.

So can the Google nest actually work on iot network instead of my main network?

whats your iot network

I know that some devices can only use 2.4Ghz so did you turn off the 5 Ghz on the iot network to test that idea

Hello aussie1497,

Segmented networks are not officially supported within HA.

HA is designed and expects a flat subnet to work as intended.

This is because every segmented network is different for IP’s and number of segments and firewalls and sharing rules and about 650495849085 other things.
This does not mean you can’t use them or that they can’t be made to work, it means that to get them working you are the support structure on your own subnet(s). Consider it Advanced mode…

The iot network is a type setup in the Asus router interface. 5G is turned off and it uses older WPA1/2 personal. Apart from that I don’t know what is special about it apart from the different icon

The network is not segmented. The two Wi-Fi networks are on the same sub net and I’m not really sure what the difference is other than the device connecting via a different AP. The only difference is 5G is not enabled on the iot network

This is all pointing to the router doing sum kind of something and Google doesn’t like it.

I don’t have an ax86 but I do run a lot of older asus routers with Merlin firmware, but I don’t know what it’s doing there. I have to say that years ago I loaded pfsense onto an old PC and do all the firewall myself on that so I know what’s happening. The Asus-Merlin boxes are all AP’s running on my side of the network after pfSense.

If you want to use this mode, you are going to have to figure out what kind of a firewall is running. If you are lucky it’s just an MDNS problem, but likely something where those can’t see the valid certs or DNS or something.

What’s the recommended way to set up your home network? I just thought it would be good not to have a 100 Iot devices along with your computer and phone in the same place even if just to visually sort them

HA is running on my nas so I don’t know if I can change that network as it’s on the lan

Straight up flat network is the easiest to maintain. The 2.4 stuff separate from the 5 stuff. 2 separate SSID’s. No special IOT mode unless you can figure it out. Start here and it should be easier to understand and maintain. All on the same subnet getting the same DHCP addresses. Important stuff with static IP addresses.
Actually on mine everything that is not transient like a test item or a friends phone is static, but that is a choice not a requirement. Make sure your servers are static though. I have a small dhcp range and lots of static room.

So at least with two ssids it should still work?

Eg
HA=ethernet
SSID1=pc/phone

SSID2=Iot, G.Home

All on the same subnet getting the same DHCP addresses. Important stuff with static IP addresses.

This is how I have it now except I can only give static addresses to about 30 things due to a limitation of the router so I’ve only done it for my stuff and cctv

I mean Google Home doesn’t work 80% of the time normally even on a single SSID. Lots of people here say it doesn’t work but if you say exactly the same thing the second time it will work
