GRILLPLATS Plug via ZHA - Possible to get all the features?

Hi all,

I recently purchased a GRILLPLATS Plug, as it was the only IKEA smart plug available for home delivery, and only realized once I got it that it's a Matter device, not Zigbee.

After some Googling, I found out that it can also be paired in Zigbee mode, which I did. To be honest, this is enough for my needs at the moment. I required a plug I could remotely control, and I have it. But I was wondering if:

  • There are way to get the all feature set to work (e.g., power monitoring)
  • It's possible to have firmware updates

Cheers!

This is what I found on the internet:

The IKEA GRILLPLATS plug is not a Z-Wave device.
It natively uses Matter over Thread, which relies on 802.15.4 mesh networking rather than Z-Wave.

It can be controlled using modern hubs compatible with Matter.Matter over ThreadUnlike Z-Wave, the GRILLPLATS uses the universal Matter standard, making it compatible with systems like Apple Home, Home Assistant, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings.

It also operates as a Thread router, strengthening your smart home mesh network.
Zigbee WorkaroundWhile not officially supported, the device contains a hidden Zigbee mode that some enthusiasts use.

By turning the plug on and off multiple times (often reported as 8 or 12 cycles), it can be forced into Zigbee pairing mode for custom platforms like Zigbee2MQTT.

Keep in mind that this Zigbee hack exposes only basic on/off functionality and does not provide the advanced power-monitoring metrics found when using native Matter.

This explains it all. Thank you.
