GWF MTK3coder MP: how to read watermeter via mbus?

In the past 3 years, I have read my watermeter with the AI-on-the-Edge Project, which has been on the better side of okay-ish.

Getting the hardware and installation is cheap and easy. After initial issues with heavy reflection and a lot of missreadings, I got it to run more or less okay.

Today, my little board with the camera failed. It seems to be a hardware failure - beyond repair.

Before going the easy road by ordering a new board with a camera, I would like to ask you for help with an alternative idea: my watermeter indicates "M-Bus". I have some questions on this.

  • wiring: this is my watermeter. there is only this little black round thing on the top of the lid. It does not feel removable. Is this the location, where the wires should go?

  • What hardware do I need? I have some experience with ESPhome and would like to have a DIY solution, rather then spending +60.- on some hardware. I have a few ESP32 boards lying around.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Chris

Black round thing is likely a seal and you find screw under it to dismount the cover for access to the terminals.

any idea on how to open that seal? I can't push, nor move it to the site. I don't want to destroy it and get in trouble with our cities energy/gas/water provider.

Try to pull it up with small utility knife for example.
