HA OS on Laptop

Hello all

I currently have HAOS installed as a vg on proxmox on a del r720 and everything is working fine.

However i am have many issues with truenas vm.

therefore I am considering installing haos on its own device.

I am considering a mini pc and running it headless., or as an alternative a nice laptop (because it has a built-in battery).

The issue i see is if i go via the laptop route how do i configure the laptop not to shutdowns when i close the lid. I still would like to run the laptop headless

any thoughts on how to do this

Thank you for your immediate response.

I read this post and from what i see this is an open issue. I did not recognize a process on how to avoid the laptop from shutting down or sleep.

I see this “fix”
Fix:
Change these lines in “/etc/systemd/logind.conf”:

#HandleLidSwitch=suspend
#HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend
#HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore

to this:

HandleLidSwitch=ignore
HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore
HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore

It said that this function was added in 5.9 now OS is at16.2 and i do not see how to do this

however i see that the file is not editable. What else can i try?

HA OS should not shutdown or go to sleep when the lid is closed

thank you @francisp

i am trying as we communicate to install HAOS on an HP elitedesk

Thank you for taking the time from your weekend
Be well

Thats better way to go :slight_smile:

Just on a very high level, notebooks are not designed to run 24/7, nor to really run with the lid closed for prolonged times (yes, I know, the dock scenario). Disadvantages (beyond the 'what happens if the sensor detects lid-closed) are:

  • overheating with the lid closed
  • small fans getting clogged
  • battery aging/ bulging prematurely
  • …

i dont think anyone running ha on a laptop cares about any of those things. simply tell them its power inefficient and looks stupid.

Hello all

I had HAOS running on a vm. Since last thursday I installed it on an hp laptop that i had laying around.

It took me a minute to install it however it has not overheated and it has the benefit of having a new battery. hence in the event of a power failure (here it happens a lot) the automation still will run.

This alo has the benefit of not having a server running 24/7. At night in lieu of the server using 132 wats at night the laptop only use 12 when resting. In addition good laptops have built-in wifi and bt

One thing I did before putting this laptop to work i cleaned all the insides (it was sitting for over 6 years) and now the temperature is hovering around 36 deg c.

The laptop is installed in a rack between 2 dell servers.

@slh a laptop must be maintained before putting in production.

If one does have a laptop laying around they should ensure that the laptop is clean that it has good thermals and a good battery.
If one does not do this then they are inviting a boat load of issues.

Perhaps if you could run it headerless, without battery,case, keyboard. You could add further heat sinks it might take pressure off the fan which will eventually burn out if run continuously. Add a 5V fan connected to USB port might work as a replacement.

or just raise the laptop from the surface with pcs of wood or if you want it to be more visually pleasing use a laptop riser with built-in fans

Exhaust/intake fans are on the back, bottom &/or sides. Keeping the lid closed for long periods will not adversely affect temperatures, assuming you haven’t placed the laptop on a blanket. Hell, just setting consoleblank will practically negate much of the extra heat it would generate, by virtue of not having the screen LEDs on constantly.

See above. Also, give your server a clean once in a while, irrespective of whether it’s a laptop or a small PC.

Bios settings (at least on Dells like mine) have specific predefined battery charge settings. Just set it to “Primarily AC” or use custom settings and the battery will not be constantly blasted with current and will cut off charging at ~85%.

…Coming from a user who has actually been running HA on a laptop with lid closed for the past few years. Which reminds me, I really need to clean out those fans…
