HA Problem setting

Hello everyone,

I’m a complete beginner and I installed HA via DietPi for an “easy” setup on an old PC. However, I’m missing some things like the module option in the settings.
Is it possible to contact me?

Hi, welcome. DietPi is not a supported OS, if you want easy go for HAOS. It is exactly that: a OS with just enough for Home Assistant.

I do not understand what you mean by modules. Are you following some outdated guide? The user interface has changed a lot over the years. If you mean addons, those are not available unless you use HAOS or Supervised installation type. The latter about to be deemed unsupported too.

Maybe dietpi has a forum to support problems relating to their OS?

Dietpi installs HA Core (venv), so supported.

Where do you expect to see module ?

There are two supported OS-es according to below docs. While DietPi is based on Debian, one could argue that it is not Debian 12:

Furthermore, Core is not considered “Easy” but for advanced users only. That is also because it lacks features such as addons, which many guides assume you have. So running HAOS on bare metal or in a VM is a way better option to begin with. What would be the advantage of Dietpi over a HA specific optimised OS?

There are only two supported operating systems to run the Supervisor on:
Home Assistant OS
Debian 12 (Bookworm)

He is not running Supervisor, so not unsupported. And I agree, core is not for the novice.

So, if I understood correctly, DietPi is not made for a novice like me. Even if the installation is “easy,” most options like the add-ons mentioned above are missing.
So, which version of Debian do you recommend in text mode, and which version of Home Assistant?
And for my current configuration, is there a way to restore it on the new installation?

If you don’t use the PC for other things, make a backup, install HA OS and restore.

I’m coming back to this post because I don’t understand something. I installed Debian 12 and, via the console, I installed HA. However, the ADD-ONS still don’t appear in the settings — why?

Did I forget something?

Add-ons are only available on HA OS and Supervised. I suspect you installed HA Core.

And in case you want to install supervised, see this topic (warning)
