HA restart required to see newly added Z-wave device

Hello, first post here and very new to HA and Z-Wave. I’ve noticed that a newly added (“included”?) Z-wave device will not appear in HA as a Device until I restart HA. I’m wondering if this is a known and or expected behavior or if it’s something I should maybe report?

I just experienced this with a new device, here are the steps I took:

  1. Plugged in Z-Wave device (Leviton DZPA1 Smart Switch)
  2. Performed inlusion process in Z-Wave JS
  3. Verified I could control the device
  4. Started a new Automation
  5. Added a Device Action and searched for me new device (it’s not listed)
  6. Restart HA
  7. Start a new Automation again and this time the Device is in the list

System info:
Controller: Zooz ZST39 LR
Z-Wave JS UI version: 4.4.0
HA version: 2025.6.3

yeah this is a known behavior with Z-Wave and HA
It’s not exactly a bug It’s more of a limitation, but it could be improved

Got it, thanks for the confirmation. Certainly a tolerable behavior considering how excellent everything else with HA is! :slight_smile:

I’ve never had to do this and does “reload” not work?

Is this documented somewhere?
Add device >> reboot HA

If anything it’s possible that HA doesn’t show device until device state updates but I have HUGE doubts you can not see newly included device unless reboot That would 100% be a NoGo. No way this is Normal. I don’t even think open zwave was that bad(not to put down that project, just comparing old and new)

I also never experienced such behavior with any of my Zwave devices…

When you add a device, it should just show up. No restart or reload required. There is no bug or limitation here.

What hardware are you using?

I think you have a browser caching issue. Refresh the browser and I bet it shows up.
