HA virtual machine on ESXi shuts itself down unexpectedly, all other VMs work fine

  • Core - 2025.1.4
  • Supervisor - 2025.03.0
  • Operating System - 14.2
  • Frontend - 20250109.2

Running on ESXi 6.7 Update 3, on a Dell PowerEdge R630.
CPU: 2 vCPU
RAM: 8GB
Hard Disk: 50GB

I’ve been running the same instance of Home Assistant for a few years now and 99% of the time, it runs days, weeks, and even months without issue. Every now and then, however, something quirky happens like the USB-attached Z-Wave hub falls offline. Typically a simple reboot of the HA virtual machine brings it back up and it will work fine for another few weeks or months.

I rebooted HA this morning and it failed to fully boot because it was out of space. I cleared out some older backups and rebooted, which worked, however, after booting to the CLI “ha >” prompt, the VM would just power down without a log entry or anything. Just, poof, it would be off. I’d have to log into ESXi to power it back on, and it would boot to the CLI, and then after a few minutes it would be off again. And again, no log entries or anything in ESXi. The last recent task would always be “Power On VM - Completed Successfully.”

After doing this between 5 and 10 times, it would finally stay powered on. Other than powering it up several times, I didn’t change anything. It just decided to work that last time.

Have anyone seen this before? Any ideas on things I can check?
