HA Voice PE: Detects voice but immediately returns to idle

Hey folks. Just got two voice PE’s from ameriDroid. I plugged them in, and immediately had weird behavior from one of the devices.

The first device works as expected. Attached to HA, “Hey Nabu” works, and I can clearly see in HA that it is accepting my voice command, switches to playing, and then responds.

The second device, not so much. It attaches to HA, “Hey Nabu” causes the wake word sound to pop, but then it immediately dies back to “Idle”.

It’s clear something is off, because the light also doesn’t twinkle when it hears the wake word. It cuts off immediately.

Troubleshooting steps I have tried:

  1. Factory reset
  2. Re-flash manually
  3. Remove/Re-add to HA
  4. Double check that all configs are identical
  5. Verify Nabu Casa connecitvity

Any other ideas?

I retried a flash. After the third flash, I got them to work! We’ll see if it continues.

Is everyone attaching them to ESP Home Builder or no?

You mean taking over the device?

In general no. You shouldn’t have to… Unless you want a custom. Wake word or want to modify the timer system or…

If you take it over you have to handle your own updates etc.

I normally do that, but it seems like if I do the device takeover, it breaks the device. It lights up white and stays that way. I’ll avoid adding it to esphome builder, then.

I ONLY take over mine because of the wake word and even then only onthe device I’m experimenting with. Eventually this will be all of mine when I engineer Friday’s final wake word. But… that’s the only reason I’d do it rn personally…
