HACS has a "new" category, but many "new" downloads haven't been updated in years. For example, "White Noise" is "new" but hasn't been updated in 7 years.
Does "new" mean anything?
Maybe newly added to HACS?
"New" until you "Dismiss new repositories" - look in the three dots menu in HACS Dashboard.

As @dcapslock says, it's "New" until you view or dismiss them. It's a way for you to take a look at all the different things available via HACS, dismiss the new and then occasionally go back and see if something "new" has shown up that would be of interest of you.
