HAOS with local browser or HAOS VM

Hi all, I am going to admit defeat with HA Supervised and of course it’s being phased out so if I explain why I went for Supervised in the first place maybe someone can advise me how to restart.

I have a touchscreen on the wall connected to a NUC which runs Debian and with a simple browser I can connect to various things on the local network, solar installation, car charger etc. It is dead easy and very reliable up to now. I understood that with HAOS I could not have a browser so I opted for supervised as I also wanted add-ons.

Now I think the best choice would be HAOS as a VM running on whatever OS is best so I can still have my browser or,

HA container but not sure about whether that will have a means of replacing the browser function even it is not actually a browser. I don’t need any internet access at all, it’s just that one or two things that I use a lot have only a “webpage” as a UI and I don’t know if they can be accessed in any other way.

Many thanks in advance.

This ^^ is the way

Thanks for the reply. Does Proxmox have a browser for my local webpage UIs ?

Hmm. Reread your post and it seems you want the browser to be used on the screen that is directly connected to your server.

Not sure if that’s possible without some jumping through hoops, so I’ll take a step back and let others answer.

Proxmox is a container manager. It can be installed on bare metal (as I and many others do). That is basically a headless server that you access using a browser on another machine.

But, Proxmox can be installed on another OS. See here:
Install Proxmox VE on Debian 12 Bookworm - Proxmox VE

My reason to ditch HA Supervised is because it’s more complicated to make work than I am able to cope with.
To install HAOS on Proxmox on Debian…Would I be risking coming a-cropper due to my limited capabilities ?

I don’t know. I run Proxmox on bare metal. I find it very easy to use. But I also have a history of messing with these types of systems.

I have never run Proxmox any other way. From the link I gave, it seems there will be some up-front work. But I suspect once that is done, it should go pretty well. No warranty provided by me

I would recommend doing some more searching and reading to get a feel for it before jumping in.

As you note, you will need an OS that can run a browser - so Windows or Linux with a desktop (ie. not Proxmox or HAOS on bare metal). Then use one of the virtualisation solutions there (eg. VirtualBox).

I used to run Ubuntu desktop with VirtualBox, but the latter was a pain in the bum. I switched to Proxmox and am much happier. If I was you, I would use the NUC as a server running Proxmox, and buy a cheap tablet for a UI.

I was hoping to avoid having two machines running. Is there not some such thing as a browser emulating app that can run on HAOS or Proxmox ? More like a kiosk thing as I don’t need internet.

So with this ^^ , just HAOS on bare metal should do it.

Just remembered something: before I got the new NUC I had installed Lyrion music server, hadn’t but I am guessing a music server would be not possible with HAOS ?

I’m all set then !

The usb stick is ready to do the install.

I run Win11 and HaOS via Hyper-V for a few months now. Backups and everything ok. Through windows Chrome to homeassistant. This way i am able to use FTP for local cameras upload, Plex server, …
