Hass.local not found

I’m using a Pi3b+ with the installation from hass.io, but I’m having a few problems. The primary one is that hass.io is not being recognised as a network address. I’m told that the Pi broadcasts this to the network, so I assume that something is blocking it. I run NordVpn on my laptop, but it doesn’t work even with that turned off. Any suggestions please?

I’m new to HA, but slowly reading through the docs, so happy for people to just point me to the relevant pages. Thanks.

I assume you are trying to access http://hassio.local:8123/? Your router may not support mDNS. Try accessing it by putting the ip address and port in the web browser.

e.g.

http://10.1.1.100:8123

Obviously don’t use that ip address use the actual IP address of your raspberry pi.

Thanks. I can get to the page with the local IP (and with my DDNS mapping too) but I really wanted to understand how hass.local worked and why it doesn’t work for me.

I can’t see if my router supports it. I have an Asus DSL-AC68U. Does most other stuff. No mention of mDNS or Bonjour. is there a way to test for mDNS support?

Are you connecting wirelessly?

First, do you connect the Laptop with a cable or thru wifi? Same Subnet without a bridge?
I had more ore less the same issue with mDNS but with routed Networks. Never found a solution.
I then switched to DDWRT, (now Advanced Tomato [Suggestion here!]) and activated Avahi / mDNS.

Laptop uses a DisplayLink docking station with homeplug most of the time and so is wired but can be wireless when not at the dock. No bridges. The RasPi running HA is also connect via a homeplug, but that is permanent. There are a number of other RasPis on the LAN, but nothing else related to HA or that plays with the network settings in anyway.

I’m betting it will be the homeplug stripping mDNS. Try connecting your laptop directly the the router with an Ethernet cable and see if it works.

Also some wireless routers strip multicast packets too.

Alas the laptop doesn’t have a network port, just USB, so the only way to have a wired connection is this way. All my wired devices go through a homeplug as the router isn’t in a place where I can surround it with other devices. I’ll test the idea and if that works try for a more permanent solution. I’ll report back here if the homeplug is the problem. (That’ll take a few days.)
