My HASS frequently stops working by itself (cannot SSH into it or not even ping it), and I have to power cycle my Raspberry Pi to get it started again.
I run an official Home Assistant Operating System installation on a Raspberry Pi 4.
I am using version 2021.7.3. The problem has occurred long time ago, but it has become more frequent now that it goes off almost one a day.
I have created a sensor to monitor the CPU temperature and it is always under 46 degree celcius. The SD card still has lots of space.
I am unsure how to get the log relevant to this issue. I tried to go to Configuration → Log, but it only shows the log after restart.
Anyone can advise on how I can fix this or get the log before the system shuts down?
I have the same problem with my system. I’m running it on a RPi 4 with 8GB and a 120 GB Western Digital SSD.
I’m not sure when the problem started happening - I have been wondering whether it started when I moved from SD-Card to SSD but given that others also see it with SD card - this is properly not likely.
As part of my debugging I’ve added an automation that restarts HA every night at 3am but that did not change anything. My Rpi still crashed - typically within 3-4 days.
Another step I took was to put a timestamp into a file once a minute to narrow down the time it happened. With that my Rpi actually ran for more than a week but yesterday it crashed as well.
Does anyone have suggestions on which log files to look at in order to narrow down the cause?
Some time ago I solved the same problem Rpi4, SSD boot on a cz forum with one user and it was found that it was caused by a temperature which was around 65 ° C. I know it sounds unlikely, but after adding the cooling the problem disappeared. It can also be caused by insufficient resource.
The temperature was 66.2 ° C when it crashed. I’ve been monitoring the temperature for a while and I have seen higher temperature in my system - above 70 ° C.
That said - I disabled some of the high usage add-ons to see if this makes a difference.
As for other resources - I don’t see anything running close to maximum.
In my case, the temperature never went above 50 °C, so overheat may not be the problem (or I guess at least not mine).
Your replies have made me recall that, the system seemed to crash more often if there are more settings being made or updated. When I was occupied by other things and not changing any settings or adding any sensors to the system, it seemed not crashing at all.
So what would be the problem? A faulty SD card seems likely?
It’s good to start somewhere. If you have another card, I would try the installation and the last backup.
Then work on the HA as usual to find out if the original SD has any bugs if the system is stable with the new SD.
Anyone found a solution on this problem? I have the same problem on my RPI 4b running 2022.3.1. I have installed heat zinks but it still stays the same. Have been like this since I installed HASS on my pi a few months ago. Its a bit annoying, but what to do?
EDIT: Cpu temp is fram 60 - 65 degree celsius

Mine is constantly crashing as well and I’ve got no idea either.
It also seems to be when the settings are adjusted it can do it quickly afterwards but we’re talking about 5 crashes are day currently
Are you running frequent ESPHome build/compile cycles? In the previous few months, there were ESPHome issues that consumed a lot of Pi’s available capacity.
I have now invested in a new cabinet with cooling fan, but my pi still stops working every sunday night / monday morning. Have to restart the power and then it works fine for another week.
