Hello folks.
What is the best way to run HASS server off of Android phone (if even possible). Android phone is an all-in-one computer isn’t it, so why not!?
I’d want it to run 24/7, with all add-ons, node red, camera feeds processing, ESPHome, working as on any other platform. I’d use iPhones, newer Android devices, etc. as clients.
I have Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s that’s I’d want to use. It’s a Chinese version that I jailbroke and installed International ROM on back in the day - so installing another ROM (if needed) is also an option.
Please let me know what you think, folks. Perhaps one of you have already done something similar.
Thanks in advance.
This is not a good idea. Get some more suitable hardware like a mini-pc, hardwire it with ethernet.
May I ask why?
I don’t think I need i7 NUC beast, what would you recommend as an alternative?
It’s a mobile phone.
Never said you need a i7 beast. Do a search on the forums, there are dozens of threads on the topic. Any basic mini PC with enough RAM and storage will do fine.
For now anyway.
There are many reasons not to, but the main one is that any guide you will find on doing so uses HA Core install type, which is no longer a supported installation type (not that running HA on a phone was ever supported).
That’s a huge jump from an Android phone. It’s like saying you’d rather go to work on a bicycle because you don’t need a Ferrari for that. Search the forums for similar threads, like @fleskefjes suggested.
Having said that, you’re gonna need something pretty beefy if you intend on running multiple camera feeds & a bunch of apps (add-ons). Looks like you’re gonna need that i7 beast after all (or at least an i5) - your phone would never have been able to handle this.
Yeah, I skipped the camera part. ![]()
To not do it!
With all you are mentioning that you want to run, the amount of RAM available, wireless connection on a system that is a server, … ![]()
You are not running a meaningful instance of HA directly on a phone as a server.. there is a reason that there is the companion app so that you can use a spare phone as a dashboard device if you have no other use for it.
For theory, a proper snapdragon outperforms a raspberry pi. So technically yes. However a phone is desinged for burst usages, not continuous running. It will heat up and kill battery first.
Do it for playing around, not for production stuff.
Thanks all for your replies.
I mentioned NUC i7 just because I have one spare, though I think I’ll use it for something else.
I previously ran i3 laptop with Proxmox/HASS, np. Meanwhile my older Android phone has been staring at me purposelessly for a while, asking to be used for something, so I thought it might work for HASS core..
‘Guess I’ll look for something else then.
You know that you can use is for a HA dashboard and even a voice assistant, right?
If you already have spare, decent hardware why on earth would you try to run it on an old mobile phone? Don’t use square wheels on your car if you already have round ones.
Square wheels last longer and keep the milage down. A full tank lasts a hell of a long time. I too like to use old tech if I can get away with it.
Quite a bumpy ride, though. ![]()
I get about 29,000 steps in on the way to work. I like a hard suspension
Sure. Don’t forget it’s a mobile telephone though ![]()
You have to be very deterministic and know the initial settings very well.
I honestly think this HA-running-in-a phone thing would not become viable for general purposes, until when people can have mature virtual machine environment on the phone hardware.
Speaking of which, and sidebar conversation: what’s the state of VM-in-phone-hardware these days? I’m sure multiple people have attempted… so what’s the latest?
