HassOs on Pi zero

Hello,

I’m new to home assistant, but I have a question.
I’m planning on moving from my current domotica system to HA because all over the internet I read nothing then good and my current system is a little bit outdated.
I really like the raspberry Pi zero because of the low power usage when idle.

the only disadvantage on my current system is that updating takes a bit longer, but sins I don’t do this on a daily basis this is not an issue for me.
Now I wanted to start the installation and then I need to make to choice for the image of the Pi3 or Pi 4.
so I was wondering it the images for hassOS are created for specific hardware, and if so, would they run on an Pi zero at all?
there off course is the possibility virtualization, but I think that will hurt the performance.

So my main question, can hassOs run on a raspberryPi zero. and would it perform a little bit?

With Kind regards

Bart

Yes they are, and no they won’t

In theory, yes it’ll “run”, but perform is optimistic. Crawl is more likely

The thing is, “low power usage when idle” is largely irrelevant as it’s unlikely to be actually idle. The Zero would be working hard, where the Pi3 would be closer to idle. You’ll maybe get a tiny power saving (probably lost in the noise of the power supply’s internal losses) in return for something that performs terribly.

Thank you for your quick response,
I assume it wouldn’t make sense then to use a pi zero.
one question about the p3.
does it matter which version I choose? I mean 3B, 3A+ or 3B+.
or are all supported?

All are supported. The 3A+ is a different form factor than the 3B and 3B+ so will need different cases.

Personally if you’re buying something for the first time… I’d buy a Pi4. The main reason being that it uses USB C for power, which is significantly less likely to give you power supply issues than the Pi3 (or older).

You also should seriously consider running off of an SSD instead of an SD card. SD cards are the other primary point of failure for Pi systems. If you do use an SD card ensure you buy either an industrial card, or one designed for high write environments like the WD Purple.

Thank you for your reply,
if I were purchasing a new one I probably would go for a Pi4.
But I have a 3B and 3A+ already for testing purposes, So I propably will use one of those 2.
USB-C actually for me would be a reason(for now) not to use a Pi4, I have a lot of micro usb cables available from old phones and stuff.
The SSD part is interesting. I will check this out if I encounter issues with the sd card. An SD card fits in every raspberry housing where an ssd is attached as an external device. that’s why I first sill try out the sd card. But definitely something to keep in mind.
