I’m have set-up some aqara sensor via ZHA. I bought them from Amazon. Worked good. So I bought 10 door/window sensors from aliexpress and ZHA says it was setup but I have a battery with a question mark and the open/close is not working. Being from China do I need to do something else to it to get information from the sensors?
No, nothing special required.
Of the ten door/window sensors I bought on aliexpress one drained batteries in a week and one intermittently forgot its pairing. The other eight work flawlessly.
Seems their quality control might be a bit shit.
Try replacing the batteries first. There’s no guarantee they came with good ones.
How many battery driven ZigBee devices do you own? And how many mains powered ZigBee devices?
All Battery 16 that work. But trying to add 10 more
Which coordinator are you using?
These devices are not quite standard Zigbee HA 1.2 (not sure about their new line that might be Zigbee 3.0, but those are still hard to find in my experience), so they can be tricky to pair and keep “connected” to your network. It’s possible they fell off, though doing so before the initial configuration and whatnot finished is a bit odd. Still, the best thing you can do at the moment is probably try to pair them again if you have not. No need to remove it first (though that doesn’t hurt); ZHA should recognize it as the same device.
If that doesn’t help, perhaps you did get a dud or there is something else going on. Long-term, using only “Xiaomi-friendly” routers/repeaters is the best way to ensure Xiaomi/Aqara devices stay connected to your network–just being careful with how you build your mesh (not all routers work well with them, and those can eventually case them to fall off your network). But that problem should take at least an hour to appear (and often happens unexpectedly days later), not right away — at least not if they aren’t devices that can be probelmatic for other reasons, like the variety of Zigbee bulbs that are bad routers in general.
If they are the new ‘E1 door/window sensors’, there is a long thread on the Zigbee2MQTT github about them.
Fixed with new firmware for the TI coordinators. Dresden Electronics also released new firmware for the Conbee to fix them.
I bought two of the Aqara buttons off of EBay. They were both Chinese. In addition to not having a scrap of English anywhere, there were no pull tabs on the batteries. One would pair, and the other would not. The one that did pair didn’t reveal any entity values. Also, out of four Aqara motion sensors purchased from that EBay vendor, one just suddenly quit. I changed batteries on all of these, and it did not fix the problems.
Xiaomi is a Chinese company, so this is what you should expect — particularly with the majority of their products that historically have not been for sale “officially” in the US.
Have you seen the post above about coordinator firmware? This could be the issue if you have the new devices.
Also, pairing these can be tricky; at least the pre-“E1” devices use a custom Zigbee profile (that is very nearly ZHA 1.2 but not quite; most ZHA 1.2 or Zigbee 3.0 coordinators can be made to work with them, but there are still some considerations with how you build your mesh, specifically what routers you use — this could be why your motion sensors suddenly “quit,” if they just fell off your network). I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone confirm that the new/“E1” models are standard 3.0, but if so, they will likely work better. If the quirks of (at least) the older devices aren’t for you, I might look into better-behaving options.
Thank you very much for your reply! I am using a new NORTEK CECOMINOD016164 HUSBZB-1 USB Hub for the coordinator. I haven’t found an easy way to update the firmware; I can only find a convoluted means to irreversibly update SD3503.
I should have been more specific: I understand that the Aqara devices are Chinese. What I should have said is this: the Aqara devices I have are targeted for the Chinese market. They are not the white & blue boxes marketed to the UK and the US. There isn’t a scrap of English anywhere, and - unlike the US and UK versions - there are no pull tabs in place over the battery connections. I have also now had two of the Aqara motion sensors quit; they worked fine for a couple of days. They also did not behave after installing new batteries, removing the device, then re-pairing.
The Aqara door/window sensors and the temp/humidity/pressure sensors all paired well and are performing great.
The “better-behaving options” are in the cards for Uncle Brad. Thanks again for the assist!
I am using the Conbee II
Yeah, I haven’t had much luck finding those either (I’m also in the US). Sometimes the product picture looks like that box, but the model number listed doesn’t match what I’d expect for the new ones, so I’m afraid to try. That being said, I have (had?) been able to make these work with an HUSBZB-1 on both Home Assistant (with ZHA) and Hubitat, but I no longer use that coordinator at all, so I’m not sure if anything has changed, and mine is some years old and would definitely not have newer firmware. I only see TI and the ConBee mentioned above (the HUSBZB-1 is a third type, EmberZNet).
I think all of the ones I’ve purchased over the years have only had Chinese instructions, so I’ve relied on English-language forums to help me. The SmartThings Community had a lot of information back in the day, but here, Hubitat, or the docs for things like Zigbee2MQTT are probably as good or better resouces nowadays for things like reset/pairing information.
What company in China did you purchase them from? I am looking at buying the windows/door sensors
They’re out of stock. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002087147265.html
I purchased some of these too:
Haven’t used them yet.
