Heiman smoke alarm HS1SA-E Plus new features in ZHA and Z2M

Dear All,
Hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas! :christmas_tree:, wish you all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday break with your loved ones.

I previously shared a proposal for adding new features to our smoke alarms on the Heiman zigbee and matter smoke alarm proposal - Hardware - Home Assistant Community and Heiman zigbee and matter smoke alarm proposal : r/smarthome, I want to thank all of you who showed interest and shared such great ideas—we truly appreciate the input!

As we move into the new year, I want to share some exciting progress. Recently, I’ve been working hard on integrating the HS1SA into both Zigbee2MQTT (Z2M) and ZHA.

We are making great progress, and I would love to share the latest developments with you here. Your thoughts and feedback mean a lot to us as we move forward.

What’s new?

  • Dual Siren Support: We have integrated both Smoke and CO siren types, it can be interconnected with CO alarms.
  • Alarm Identification: You can now identify exactly which type of alarm triggered the siren initially.
  • Platform Compatibility: We have successfully tested these features using Home Assistant Automations and Node-RED, if you need anything else, please let us know.
  • remote test: Trigger a device self-check and test the interconnection without needing to reach for the ceiling.
  • remote mute: Manually hush the alarm from your dashboard if you have confirmed it is a false alarm.
  • Temperature: it can shows the ambient temperature near smoke alarm.
  • Heartbeat light switch: If installed in a bedroom, you can now disable the heartbeat LED to prevent it from being annoying at night.
  • Smoke level: Real-time smoke levels are now exposed to your dashboard, allowing you to create custom “pre-alarm” notifications.

where to buy it?

Please feel free to join the discussion below!

May you please clarify whether these are mains powered, replaceable battery powered, sealed battery powered, or some combination?

Also, may you please clarify whether the interconnection supports zwave/Zigbee/matter bindings which continue to work without a server and/or without a router? I suppose if these are battery powered, then they couldn’t talk directly without a router anyway so bindings wouldn’t add as much value.

The rest of it looks amazing! So many details and controls are exposed, it’s wonderful and provides a lot of flexibility! Really excited to see this!

Thank you very much for the suggestion. The HS1SA is powered by replaceable batteries only, but please stay tuned! We will be rolling out various new smoke alarm series.

Yeah, as you mentioned, Zigbee and Matter bindings don’t work if there’s no router, but we will have solution for that.

We will clarify those various separately.

This is only the beginning. We plan to continue improving our solutions step by step.

Hi LeoXie

I have an HS1SA-M smoke detector. Home Assistant shows that a new 1.5 update is available. I updated, but the update failed when the progress bar reached 100%. What could be causing the update to fail? The SmartThings platform doesn’t report any updates for this detector.

Is this on the market yet? I’m finding the product code without “EF” on the end, so I am presuming it is different? I am interested in testing if I can get hold of one.

Hello

In Home Assistant, we can set up direct binding from device to device and it should work even if the server is down, so battery device should continue to work in this use case.

No ?

yeah, at least one router as its parent, the battery powered devices can talk to each other with binds

Hi

Thank you for the answer.

I sent you an email because I am interested in the latest version of your smoke detector.

Still got no news

Glad that you reached out again, almost lost you, I checked many times, I still can’t find your Email.

If today I buy a HS1SA-E, will it have these new functionalities (like temperature) ? Out of the box or after a firmware upgrade ?

Or should I buy specifically an HS1SA-EF which is another model ?

please wait, we are in holiday break, will keep you posted in few days.

Hi @leoXie, as I already have some Heiman devices in the past and currently, I’m really interested to test this one and provide feedback

Hi,

Are these available to purchase in Australia?

Hi @leoXie, and thanks for the DM, I hope you had a nice break,

It is still not clear for me, is this a firmware update for existing devices (HS1SA-E) or a new model that will be available soon (HS1SA-EF) ?

Hi @Leoxie,

I’d like to start by saying a big thank you to you/ Heiman for taking the time to engage with the Home Assistant community and actively ask for our feature wishlist. It’s really appreciated to see a manufacturer listening to users and working towards better integrations :raised_hands:

I was wondering if it would be possible to get a clearer overview of the different HS1SA models (HS1SA-E, HS1SA-EF, HS1SA-M), specifically focusing on what new or planned features each version is targeting. It would be super helpful for the community to understand how these models differ not just today, but also in terms of future capabilities.

One feature that would be especially valuable for me is grouped alarm triggering — meaning that when one smoke detector goes off, it can trigger all other connected smoke alarms in the house.

Importantly, I don’t mean this via Home Assistant automations, but directly between the sensors themselves . The idea is to have a fully independent safety mechanism that still works even if Home Assistant is down (for example, due to a power outage or if the fire impacts electricity). In that case, relying on automations might not be sufficient, so a built-in interconnection between the detectors would be ideal.

Thanks again to Heiman for the openness and collaboration with the community. Looking forward to hearing more about the roadmap and possibilities! :slightly_smiling_face:
