Heiman zigbee and matter smoke alarm proposal

Dear Matter, Zigbee2mqtt and HA experts and fans,

This is Leo from Shenzhen Heiman Technology Co., Ltd. we started a new team to focus on the experiences for DIY users, we’ve got a lot of feedback of adding more functions to our smoke alarm, like the mute alarm, remote test and interconnection, etc, and now, here we are …

we are going to start with our zigbee smoke alarm which model named HS1SA, if you guys love it, we will do these updates to more models of our smoke and CO sensors. including our matter smoke and co alarms, but now, we can only do that with Home assistant.

So here is the engineering sample that we have added to Zigbee2mqtt, if we can get your suggestion and proposal, that would be a great honor to us, we would appreciate your advice, we are all ears.

Thank you all in advance.

Thank you for your efforts. For those of us using ZHA, will this also work (I do not own these yet, but I’m certainly interested)? ZHA will often do standard things out of the box, non-standard things require a device specific quirk.

Not sure if this is a hardware restriction or not, but have you thought about adding more sound effects?

At the very least, it would help distinguish between a fire & CO alert, but an additional “ding dong” option would be great too.
Could never understand why you need a dedicated siren device to achieve this when you already have something with a siren installed.

I think the answer to that would be that you would not want to wear out the battery of a device that is vital to protect your life in case of fire by using it as a doorbell.

I have a powered siren for a doorbell because you can place it anywhere, near a wall socket. The smoke alarm goes where it is most effective for smoke. At least older homes do not have easy power supply near, so battery operated is way less hassle.

Using 3 of these (SmokeSensor-EF-3.0/HS1SA) with firmware 2022.08.16. Unfortunately Z2M seem not to offer OTA updates for this model. It would be nice if you can provide upgrade instructions to a newer firmware.

Yes, that would certainly factor in to buying desicions.

Hi Edwin, Thank you very much for your suggestion and your thoughts, as you mentioned, ZHA often do standards thing, it’s hard to support all of those features to it, it may only has part of functions will get supported, we will test it and let you know.

so our plan is to support Zigbee2mqtt first, and then Matter (ther developers who work in ZHA may have worked on matter as well), at the end, if there are enough users want to support ZHA, we will try to add it to ZHA, too, but that’s not easy.

Hi ShadowFist, thank you very much for your thoughts.

yeah, that’s the hardware limitation, as you suggested, we have add the different duty cycle frequency to the beeper, it should able to identify fire, co or motion alarm. if you still want more sound pattern, we are also going to augment the one of our siren products, that will have more sound effects.

for basic users, the smoke alarm can do the basic sound for them, for the advanced users, they still have an option to get satisfied.

exactly, smoke alarm is designed for safety purpose, you can not use to as a doorbell, but it can be triggered by CO alarm, heat alarm or smoke alarm.

Hi Tamsy, thank you very much for your comment, that one is able to ota, we can do some improvements to that model, but unfortunately, we can do all thos updates to it, because we have updated some code and changed the zigbee module to Silicon Labs EFR32MG22, due to the limitation, we will figure it out which function can add to the existing products, and provide an ota guide.

Thank you again Edwin, yeah, that why we decided to argument it.

I would say ZHA should be easier because some things are supported by default wheras Z2M needs to specify everything. A quirk for ZHA should not be more difficult than Z2M support. ZHA is also the core implementation, so it is used frequently as well.

That is why i have fire alarms that are mains powered, but with a 10 year battery backup with a replacable battery.

I can only monitor the battery on it however, so I would be very interested in a Matter alternative.

My requirements are

  • mains powered
  • battery back with replacable battery
  • linked with other fire alarms without the need for other devices, like a coordinator.
  • ability to work standalone Matter
  • ability to mute over Matter

Thank you Edwin, we will try to figure it out and keep you updated.

Hi @WallyR , Thanks for the proposal.

Regarding the linked function, do you prefer wired or wireless interconnection? if you prefer wireless interconnect in matter standard, it has to require a thread dongle that running thread on Home assistant, currently, the smoke alarm running on matter protocol, it can not communicate with each other without parent.

we have Sub-G solution that is able to do that, but it can work standalone with matter, it requires a matter bridge.

here is a simple topology for your reference, the smoke alarm can be connected with CO alarm and Heat alarm wirelessly, if you also have a gateway, the information can send to you app, if you don’t have, those devices still are able to link each other locally.

The Matter protocol does provide the opportunity to do so, but it seems Apple and Google are not offering support to set the links. Especially for fire alarms, it would be important to have:

Home Assistant does to some extent according to this, with some caveats:

Does the Heiman have the required binding cluster, and if not are there plans to implement it in future firmwares?

It would be great if Heiman could join the Works with Home Assistant program, I think that will be benificial to both parties:

great idea, will do so.

I have the Matter smoke alarm. I am quite happy with its functionality. I like that it’s quite small, nevertheless I would slightly prefer a more classical shape.

Apart from the already mentioned mains powered (+ battery backup) version, I have nothing to add. But I want to say thank you for reaching out to the Home Assistant community. This really makes a difference for us (and increases the chances that future products will also be from Heiman ).

Thank you Gnnr for your commenting, glad that you already have our matter smoke alarm, yeah, that was the tiny one. also we would thank you for your proposals, we will take it in consideration, hope we can get more idea and proposal from user base, that would be benificial for both parties, like win-win.
