Heiman zigbee and matter smoke alarm proposal

Just want to point out that Zigbee Home Automation - Home Assistant says only 25.8% of active installations have ZHA.

Matter is on 32.3%.

Homekit Bridge is 17.8%, MQTT is 46.7%, Philips Hue is 15.8%, and Shelly is 22.8%.

Oh, I just learned about Siterwell GS886M Smoke & CO Alarm is apparently coming out soon with Matter+Thread, too. Presented in Denver, CO, USA last September 2025. https://store.siterwellhome.com/blogs/all-blogs/siterwell-showcases-matter-compatible-smart-safety-solutions-at-cedia-expo-2025?srsltid=AfmBOop1gjXga_9LxEcLmmM4vG49LU1TQWyDo5VD2ycw5to0WgHCe32U

I was in that discussion too and one of the things we found was that vendors could send out an update that removed features and the user could do nothing if they installed it, because the vendor could lock the update process.

This however was not a Matter specific thing. It was a recommendation in the Matter vendor guide, but the same feature works for Zigbee too, because it was a chip feature. Espressif recommend it in general on their chips when doing public releases.

I think that number is misleading. The number of matter devices available is far below Zigbee still. Many people have trouble installing Matter devices if they do buy them, Matter devices often have very limited features. Many people will have bought a Skyconnect back in the day promising multipan, only to find out it wasn’t possible and switched to Zigbee while keeping Matter installed. I would not be surprised if Nabu Casa shipped their hardware with Matter preinstalled or installed it automatically when people plugged in the Skyconnect.

I think the number is somewhat accurate, but Zigbee is split out over ZHA and Z2M.
Another important note is that the Matter networks might often just be less than a handful of devices, where Zigbee networks seems to be way larger.
The number of the installations is therefore a bit misleading.

Another consideration is that ZHA comes “out of the box” with HA, while Z2M and Matter need specific installation. Reporting of statistics is also disabled by default, and requires specific action to enable. So it makes sense that the numbers skew toward more advanced users and people who go deeper into the options.

A lot has been done lately to “dumb down” HA to make it more user friendly for beginners. There’s a good reason for doing this if you want to reach the largest audience possible with your product. Which brings me back to the suggestion to start with things that users find simple, things that don’t require learning, installing and maintaining “extra” stuff. Things like ZHA.

Hi Edwin,
I wish you had a brilliant Christmas! :christmas_tree:

We’ve been working hard on the HS1SA-EF integrations for ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT, And I updated with another post, the development almost done, could you take a look if that’s suit for you?

Thanks for the suggestion! We have done our best to optimize the siren, and we have now integrated both Smoke and CO siren types. I have shared an update in another post, as development is almost complete. Could you take a look and see if this suits your needs?

While the older version can be updated via OTA, it doesn’t support these new advanced functions. That is why we have released this new version. I’ve shared more details in another post, as development is almost complete. Could you take a look and see if this fits your needs?

Thanks for the feedback! While we’re going to start designing brand-new models soon, we’re currently focusing on upgrading our existing lineup first. I’ve posted an update since the work is nearly finished. Let me know if this looks good to you!

Heiman smoke alarm HS1SA-EF-2nd new features in ZHA and Z2M - Home Assistant Community

@leoXie - Happy New Year! I am happy to see that Heiman is reaching out to the HA community! I am currently setting up my System for a new house - currently the complete equipment is running in the same room of our old home operated with the router which will move to the new house. HA runs on a PI5 and a thread network is running using the ZBT-2 radio from Nabu Casa. I have 8 Heimann Matter/thread smoke detectors running on the system. Setting uo worked just fine, also updating the firmware to 1.4 worked fine. However, I have an issue that the smoke detectors randomly are dropping off the network. Sometimes recovering after minutes, sometimes after an hour or two, sometimes not at all. They reappear though when the test button is pressed. In the Matter integration the log shows those events as nodes becoming unreachable and re-subscription failing. It almost appears like the detectors go in a deep sleep mode randomly which stops them from staying on the network. Right now this is a test environment, however once deployed in a couple months I would want to rely on a smoke detector setting the alarm to trigger the others - my HA will be on a back-up power device (UPS) as the router will be, hence the issue discussed here with having the border router available is solvable even is the main power supplly drops out. So it would be great to understand how to make the smoke detectors reliable in keeping the connection. Cheers, Andreas

Hi Andreas,
Happy New Year!
Thanks for your feedback, could you Email me [email protected] for further support, I will help with that.

hi.

I’m trying to understand what are the differences between HM-720 series, and C1 series ?

I’m looking for a set of sensors (2x smoke, 1x CO) for my camper where I will have a HA Green. The Heiman website lack user’s guide with technical details, installation guide… And the HM-720 page shows a hard-wired cable.

I also wonder if I should take zigbee or Thread/Matter model. I plan to buy the ZBT-2 module. And I have asked the light controllers to be zigbee. I will also have Hue remotes (but linked to ZB, not Hue bridge).

Thanks for commenting, it used for different Countries.

C1 is compliant with with UL certification, it can be sold in the USA, and the HM-720 for EU market.

it didn’t has a hard-wired cable in this page, may I ask which model did you refer to?

currently, both of zigbee and matter over thread are provide basic alarm functions, mute and siren functions have not supported yet, if you wish to have more functions like what we did with HS1SA-E now, you may need to wait for a while, but if you just need the basic functions, both of zigbee and matter versions are good choice.

thank you for your reply.

I’m refering to this on the product page:

That is Natural GAS sensor, not CO alarm.

I guess the pictures above come from here:

Very nice that you take the time to get feedback this way. I’m a happy user of Heiman smoke alarms and co alarms. Interconnectability would really be great. But you specifically talk about the zigbee variant. Are you planning to do this for the zwave version to?
