Hello :) a simple question re Ethernet

Hello,

I am buying a Home Assistant Green. I am supposed to put it Ethernet. My Ethernet is up stair and Home Assistant Green a down stars!

Home do I do it?

Bill

Choices
. Run an ethernet cable from upstairs to downstairs
. Install the HA.Green upstairs

It is not recommended to use Home Assistant Green with a Wi-Fi dongle. The controller of your smart home should have a reliable, stable wired connection at all times.

Either way, if you’re running a ZHA (zigbee) protocol, you’ll likely need to distribute end points for the signal to reach where you need it. Smart plugs/outlets that plug into existing electric can act as router end points, as do USB Repeaters (like the one below).

Bob, Very good. Do I needs to put zig in even room?

Where to put end devices or repeaters depends on your home layout and the location of your other devices seeking the signal. I have a ranch style layout, and have a plug and/or repeater in every other room, as well as one in the basement and a shed that’s about 40 feet from the house itself.

Bob, Excellent. Bill

Welcome!

The green is very small - you only need a few inches of space next to your router and you can plug it in directly.

Although it needs an Ethernet connection, it communicates with everything else wirelessly using a number of protocols including wi-fi, so it doesn’t really matter where you put it.

One of those protocols is Zigbee, but you didn’t mention it in your post. If you haven’t already got any Zigbee devices I’d hold off spending money to start with and just experiment with the Green itself. Zigbee is great, but it can be one hell of a rabbit hole if you’re just starting out.

Jack, Unfortunately, I have a Zig already  Bill
