Hi, I have a wierd situation with our HomeAssistant. My brother and I shared a home until he passed away in May of last year. He was a software engineer and has the house filled with computers and programmed to control everything. I know I should have paid a lot more attention to how everything works, but I didn’t. We control all of the holiday lights with the HomeAssistant Greencontroller in the closet and everything worked fine thru Christmas last year, then in May it just all stopped. I can’t control my flagpole light or any of the other controllers, when I click on the link I just get a message: unable to connect to HomeAssistant. What happened and how do I get it to connect again? I am really not at all experienced with computers, my brother was a genius and handled it all. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Have you tried to power cycle the Homeassistant box? If that resolves it you may need to wait several minutes for it to start up before you try controlling anything.
What happens if you use a phone or laptop on the same network and try to go to

And:

Hello Perry,
Would like to assist you and require some info please.
- Do you know the kind of Home Assistant setup your brother installed: Home Assistant OS, Supervised, Core, etc.
- Can you provide a screen shot of your main dashboard; please delete any sensitive/private info.
- If you cannot provide the information above I can guide you to install zerotier in your system so I can remotely access your setup. I understand this might be too much but is the closest you can get to an onsite visit. Consider an onsite visit even if you have to pay as it can save, if the right person is engaged, hours of frustration.
- Rebooting is a way out if it solves the issue, but it is short term workaround. Long term you need to understand your system, so you can either improve, or redo. All systems require TLC longer term so do not sit idle if problem is somehow fixed. Next time the bite might be stronger or lethal from a systems point of view.
- Alternatively remove the system and go back to living life like the majority of people around the world (i.e. simplified manual control of everything).
- If you can ask the right questions AI can be of great assistance.
Hope you get things sorted somehow.
Also, what is the link? What url does it take you to?
I have tried power cycking the box a couple of times and it did not work. I have tried accessing it from multiple computers on the same network and I always get the same error message.
- I am not sure what kind it is and I don’t know how to identify the answer to that.
- If the dashboard is the screen where I controlled the lights I can’t access that to get a screen shot, that is what I lost access to.
- I appreciate the offer but I don’t give access to someone I don’t personally know.
- I know I should have paid closer attention when he was alive and learned the system then, his death was unexpected and of course way to soon.
It is the one that starts 192 that wiukld take me to the screen to control the lights and outlets and other sensors he has in the house. There was a routine I would activate and de-activate at CHristmas time to control all of the lights inside and outside for the decorations.
Right, so something like http://192.168.0.xxx:8123. Is there an ‘s’ on the end of http? So it would read https://19etc.
I think you already have…
That suggests your running a Home Assistant Green which runs HAOS (Home Assistant Operating System), does it look like this?
If so are there any lights blinking on it? If not check the power supply to it (at the plug). If there are blinking ligths it might be worth unplugging it, waiting a minute, and plugging it back in… then see if the link works.
The next step would be to plug a monitor and keyboard into it get information, but let’s hope it’s simpler than that.
And lastly for now… my condolences regarding your brother. Losing siblings that you’re close to is brutal, I’m 4 years into losing my little sister and it still wrecks me… hang in there.
I really appreciate your condolences and it is gut wrenching I am 63 now and have lost 3 of 5 siblings and both parents so life is getting a bit lonely and dark at times but I am still very close with the remaining family and friends so life is good.
Also, you got me thinking about the secure access and it solved the issue. My brother had created a really secure network for the house and the guys helping even commented they couldn’t understand a lot of it. Around the time I lost access one of his security VPNs, I think that is what it is called, expired. I found the box was rejecting the connection because it was no longer coming in as secure. I found the way to access it and change the seeting and I am in again.
Thanks to everyone who reaced out to help. Success!
Awesome! That is what I was getting at but since I didn’t know how much of this you understood I figured I’d start slow with basics. Anyways the forum community’s here for you as you need help understanding your brothers set up.
