Help troubleshooting a Z-Wave network

Hi all. I am new to HA (moved from Homeseer about 2 months ago). I use an Intel NUC with a basic install of HAOS. I have ~ 66 Z-Wave devices and use a Z-Net G8 (800 chipset) for the controller, with 7.22.2 SDK. I use the Z-Wave JS UI add-in. My Z-Net is hardwired to the LAN. Loving HA as it is so much more capable, but feeling so lost in this area. Homeseer seemed to be pretty rock solid when it comes to Z-Wave, but that could just be my flawed perception.

I have noticed very off things on my network such as automations triggering when they should not (like triggered by a switch turning off that was off the whole time). Plus a whole bunch of other things like lag, zwave command failures that were prematurely termination automations, etc. I have done a few things to work around some of the symptoms, but the root cause is still there and I have no idea how to further troubleshoot or solve it. I am looking for some advice / guidance.

I am noticing in the logs that there are many controller errors / resets as well as what seems to be an incredibly chatty network (but I do not know what a normal z-wave network should look like).

Please let me know what steps might be taken next (or other info I can post here) to figure this out, as I am guessing this is abnormal.

Things like this occur randomly between every 3 minutes to 3 hours (from the zwavejs_current.log file):

And then those resets seem to propagate a rescan of the whole network. This is from the z-ui_2025-02-12.log file I see an incredible amount of continual chatter that looks like this, just a very small snip but it continues through all of my devices. (I think that this is what was triggering some of my automations by re-reporting the off state of a device):

The connection between host and controller keeps closing and is, I assume, also causing comms issues. How is the device connected? via ethernet over LAN and you are using tcp:// end point in Z-wave JS?

Has anything changed with the way you had the controller wired up or connected? diff cables? ports? etc.

thanks @baudneo . The device is hardwired to the LAN, connected to the same switch as the NUC, and uses the tcp:// end point in Z-wave JS UI. Nothing has changed as far as wiring or ports. I have not taken a deeper look into logs until recently, so I do not know if this has been an ongoing problem that I did not notice…

I recommend switching Ethernet cables and trying a diff port on switch, just to rule out the simpler stuff. Check logs as you try each thing to see if any changes.

I have an older UPS that I have to have the ethernet cable angled a certain way so all pins make a solid connection, maybe something like that is going on?

Thanks again for the input! I picked up a new switch and cables to refresh the whole network backend. It was time in any case, so no harm done. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. I think that my next step will be to restore the z-wave network to my Smartstick G8 that uses USB connectivity and see if this changes the symptoms…

I think it is stable now, but need to monitor for a few more days. I have noticed that the system UI sometimes becomes unresponsive for 30-45 seconds when I am using it… seems a bit random and about 2 or 3 times a day. While troubleshooting this I checked out the supervisor logs and found a repeating DNS error.

INFO (MainThread) [supervisor.plugins.dns] Restarting CoreDNS plugin
INFO (SyncWorker_3) [supervisor.docker.manager] Restarting home assistant OS_dns

There was nothing obviously wrong with my network settings but I made some changes that seem to have taken care of the error. After this the random z-wave controller resets seems to have vanished. I guess this makes sense if there were network issues in the HA server.

Hoping that this does it. I’ll post here again if not…
