Hi, this is my first post so please forgive me if I’m not in the right location to ask this.
I’ve been using Home Assistant for 2-3 years and Mosquitto broker for at least a year now with very minimal issues when it comes to updating. I’ve tried to install the latest update 6.5.0 a couple times now and every time I do, it fails to start. The error isn’t very descriptive and I’m not seeing any posts popping up with other people in the same boat.
- I am going from Mosquitto Broker 6.4.1 to 6.5.0.
- I’m using the default configuration.
- Every time I try to start the service I only get one line added to the logs. The error is “exec /init: input/output error”
Any assistance on whether or not this is a flawed update or there is something I need to do would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi,
- Is your install of Mosquito standalone (e.g. on a seperate server) or the HA Mosquitto Add-On?
- HAOS? Supervised? other?
- Any other “odd” signs? (ask in case of dreaded uSD card corruption disk issues)
Something sounds very wrong with the install - my HAOS broker has “just worked” for as long as I can remember. The logs just have the usual reconnections from the HA MQTT Integration:
025-02-08 13:05:31: New connection from 172.30.32.2:47502 on port 1883.
2025-02-08 13:05:31: Client <unknown> closed its connection.
Have you tried:
- Create a FULL backup, save to another device.
- Restore a backup ONLY of the broker:

- Try a different version of backup to restore?
- Try broker
at the bottom of the config page.
- Worst case, FULL backup again, then remove the broker Add-On, and install again.
Here’s a generic guide to setting up the MQTT broker and MQTT-native relevant add-ons which might help…:
Sonoff Tasmota fails to connect to MQTT - #3 by FloatingBoater
There’s some “hidden” config in the Mosquitto broker Add-On as HA creates credentials for HA internal connections (e.g. the MQTT integration) so I’m not sure if something might survive a re-install.
If this helps,
this post!
