I have what I think is an issue with my Z-wave door lock automations. Before I get into that, here’s some background on my current configuration:
Home Assistant Green
Core 2025.12.1
Supervisor 2025.12.2
Operating System 16.3
Front end 20251203.1
I have an AEOTEC Z-Stick 10 Pro and am using Z-Wave JS & the ZHA integrations to talk with my Zwave and Zigbee devices. I have 4 Zwave door locks and 1 Zigbee. The issue: when I try to create an automation (action) for a Zwave door lock, there are no actions to select from; contrast with my Zigbee door lock, there are actions available. Attached is a screen cap for one of my Zwave door locks (same for all other Zwave door locks).
It looks like I can specify an action of “Lock” instead of using the Device (I can’t post a 2nd picture due to me being new here) and assume this will work, but would like to know why the device action above has no actions listed. I don’t have any problems controlling the lock with Home Assistant either.
It would be helpful to see what others have to confirm what I’m seeing and to determine what steps I can take for possible resolution. Or maybe I’m not doing anything wrong and that’s just a Zwave thing … I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem right? Thoughts?
If you select a device it should give you options in “action” to show available actions. Not sure why yours is greyed out
Is same true for other locks?
As other user said, you can just select the action first of lock.lock or manually enter the action by changing from ui to “edit in yaml”
Reboot may clear this or maybe
Specific to the one lock.
Thanks all … strangely, I have four Zwave locks, one from Yale and three from Kwikset. All four Zwave locks won’t show me actions under under the Device as shown in my original post. The fifth lock is Zigbee and it shows as expected. So it’s only happening with my Zwave door locks. Funny thing is I swear it didn’t always act this way.
What I noticed is that if I create a new automation, for let’s say my Front Door Lock, observe that there are no actions available, change the device to something else like let’s say my Front Yard camera, it will correctly show me the actions for the Front Yard camera, but then if I change it back to my Front Door Lock, it continues to show me the actions for the Front Door camera.
I honestly think there’s a bug somewhere … my install of HA is fresh on Green … so I’m not sure where/if there’s anything I could have done to have caused this. And I don’t know where else to go for some help.
BTW, I did try using the “Lock” action instead of Device … and I think it’s working, but like I said, I don’t think I should have to do that. The Device actions should show me available actions?
If there is a control, there should be an action. I have a couple of Z-Wave Kwickset 620 locks and they work fine except for the lack of LR.
Strange things happen sometimes while including a Z-Wave device. Restarting the HA server and/or the HA app often helps. Excluding, resetting and re-including the problem device may help, too.
Edit:
There is also one interesting thing about the Kwickset 620 locks. Although they are battery powered, they work as Z-Wave repeaters. I discovered that when I was switching some of my battery powered devices from LR to mesh. Pulling the battery pack out from the lock made those devices unavailable. They did not switch to other repeaters even when I woke them up. I needed to re-include those devices with the locks powered down. So, I would not try to add a new mesh device while some Kwitckset lock is powered.
