Home Assistant App Remote Access

Hi all,

I’m a HA newbie coming from Samsung SmartThings and waiting for my mini pc and stuff to arrive in the post to set up my HAOS. Exciting :grinning:

Had a quick question regarding remote access of the app and controlling home devices remotely.

Since HA is completely a local server I’m assuming the iOS app (or Android app if there is one but I am an iOS user) only connects to the HA server via the local ip? So if I want to be able to control things remotely I can do my port forwarding on my router and I have static ip with dns A name so that’s I can do but just wondering if this is how HA is supposed to be remotely controlled?

Thanks

Try a VPN.

You’ve described one of several ways to provide remote access to Home Assistant. More are described here:

FWIW, I use Tailscale. Their free tier allows up to three users. There’s a Tailscale Add-on available.
