Home Assistant Cloud STT 10 sec delay

Hey guys,

I have 3 HA Voice PE’s + Home Assistant Cloud for STT and TTS + OpenAI integration, so a very basic recommended out-of-the-box setup.

I am based in Sydney, Australia. Fibre internet 500 Mbps down, 50 up.

Everything seemed to be working great, until seemingly Speech-to-text STT started to run super slow a couple of days ago or so:

  • Voice PE’s just look like they keep listening
  • on the phone, it also looks like it keeps listening
  • the same in the browser

Before it would start processing and print out what I said almost immediately after I finished talking. The environment is quiet at home. Now there is a significant delay, around 8-10 seconds.

I also tried using Home Assistant Cloud only voice assistant, to take OpenAI out of the equation - the relay is the same, 8 seconds or so.

Any ideas what is going on? Has anyone experienced the same behaviour recently?

UPDATE:

Good to know! I am on 2026.1.1 right now.
Is there some related GitHub issue I can use to track?
Is it this one? 2026.1 Introduces Lag to Voice Assist Speech-To-Text · Issue #160534 · home-assistant/core

That’s right. PR has already been merged. If you don’t want to wait, I left instructions in one of the posts on how to restore the old VAD.
