Home assistant companion app - White screen on android

Hello Team,

I have an older tablet at home (Samsung galaxy tab E), which has some custom rom (ViperOS) intalled on it, which is android 7+.
I’ve read that the requirement for the app to work is Android 6+.

After installation (or cache+data clear) the app starts up normally, let’s me click on search for home, and it finds my home’s IP.
After I hit connect on that, it will turn into a white page, with HA icon on the top and that’s it.
Won’t load anything else, no matter how much I wait or restart it.

Any ideas?

Regards.

White screen = almost always caused by android webview version being too old.

Not sure how to update it on a custom OS, but there are a few threads here if you search for “webview”.

I think the only Webview I can find is from chrome installation, and it’s version 59 (currently we are at 144 or something).
All “up to date”, I can’t update anything.

I completely disabled the webview in the system settings, and it’s now loading in properly.
If anyone will have the same issue in the future.

Thanks for the finding ShadowFist <3

BUT
Because it’s using chrome’s UI instead of the normal one (I guess), I can’t use the tablet with the companion app to add Matter devices (to Thread), as it feels like it’s in browser.

Here you go. Try following the instructions here. Hopefully it’ll work for you to get the companion app working with an updated webview [solved by installing new WebView version] Lovelace cards lost vertical spacing
