Home Assistant eMMC lifetime

I bought the Home Assistant Green about a year ago, and the eMMC lifetime is already at “80% used.”

This isn’t mentioned in the FAQ, in fact, the device is promoted as “beginner-friendly.” A system with a maximum lifespan of around two years is anything but beginner-friendly.

I’ve since learned that it’s recommended to use a USB SSD from the start to reduce wear on the internal storage. I could still do that now, but it’s concerning that the eMMC is already close to wearing out and could fail within a few months.

Does this mean I now have to buy a completely new system for Home Assistant and discard the Green?

The HA Green is advertised as user-friendly, but this situation is unacceptable.

Just plug in a USB SSD and use the move data function to migrate. It just have to be larger than the current size.

The eMMC lifetime will not deteriorate while you are on the USB SSD.

Thanks, I will try that.

I think the eMMC wore out because of this:

The third reality smart plugs flooded the zigbee network, the log files and the database.

Home Assistant Green should provide some form of warning when something like this risk compromising the whole system. I mean if the eMMC lifetime decreases rapidly over a few weeks it should be easy for the system to provide some warning that something unusual is happening.

A user that bought the HA green the easiest way you can start using Home Assistant. It's plug-and-play..., can unknowingly break their system just by adding some smart plugs, without any kind of warning system in place?

Integrating the SSD worked without any problems. I plugged it into the USB port of the HAGreen and clicked on “System/Storage/Move Data Disk”.

No formatting of the SSD was required, and after about 15 minutes, Home Assistant booted normally.

My only concern is that the eMMC (already at 80% lifetime usage) might still be used for certain tasks, such as system updates.

A system like this really shouldn’t rely on eMMC at all.
