Home assistant (rpi4b after v17 update) losing wifi settings on restart!

I upgraded to 17.0 (raspberry pi 4b 64) and now seemingly randomly the system loses it’s wifi settings on restart and it should not do that.

It happened directly after the install. I fixed it in the interface (needing to use a lan cable) and then restarting it to check what happened, no issues, starts ok. Next night it lost wifi, no restart, it just was no longer connected. Same thing, connect lan and put in values and restart multiple times, no issue. Now it has gone a couple days since last restart. Restarted after making an update and again it finds no connection, does not connect to wifi.

Anyone have any idea what could cause this? and most importantly how to get it to keep the wifi settings between ALL restarts like it always has done?

What are the OS logs saying?

there have not been any errors thrown that the system notified me on (that i checked from the start) - as it restarted after setting it, I thought it was ok. 2nd time it lost it randomly without a known restart and then after multi-booting I thought it would be fine… until now when it wasn’t. :frowning:

I will dig deeper in the logs, my hope was this was something known - unfortunately I will not be able to access it until tomorrow as I am away until earliest tomorrow.

Any tips as to which logs to look at where I will most likely find something?

Well you would be looking at the ‘host’ logs (the operating system on which the home assistant containers are running and we’re looking for something that might have triggered your network to drop. It might have been a connection drop from the wifi and it wasn’t able to reconnect, or am error showing up saying it can bo longer talk to the WLAN interface.

well, it is that there is no wifi connection settings - I need to search and find the wifi again and then put in the password manually. Having never had this problem before I am not sure what it looks like when working normally but I guess it would even if the network was not available at first it would save the network and password and try again which it is not doing. This has only now happened after this update.

Using WIFI to run a server is not recommended. Any server. Even Home Assistant.
If you can use Ethernet, that is highly suggested.

ok, never experienced any issues with wifi before now after upgrading to v17 - wifi has worked more than well enough. … and had never lost credentials on restart.
I have it connected to lan now as well as wifi… but our vpn, zerotier does not seem to either use it for some reason if the wifi is not running… but again none of this has ever been an issue before v17.

I see nothing… this time I had to restart completely (could not access via lan … it gets stranger) and this time it restarted with wifi.

In the log interface only the logs since this startup are viewable… and since it started fine this time I am not seeing anything in the startup now. I understand there should be logs copied to /config/home-assistant.log.1
but last time they were written to was 2025-11-07?

Is there somewhere else or another way to see logs from earlier than the current startup? (or a config that somehow got turned off?)

thanks for your help

What I was trying to say is disable WiFi and it will stop switching back and forth. OR if you still insist on WiFi, disable the ethernet jack. Only use one of them.

I concur with the Ethernet over wifi if it is an option.
There might be something altered in the wifi driver in this version of the kernel, perhaps something to do with a ‘sleep’ function.
If there is nothing in the logs then there isn’t much we can troubleshoot. Is Ethernet an option?
