We built this for our founder’s own house, where the family finally reads the house instead of asking him about it.
Household Briefing is a small custom integration that composes a plain-English summary from the entities you already have — weather and today’s forecast, today’s calendar, who’s home, what’s open or unlocked or still on, low batteries, pending updates, and devices that stopped responding. No cloud, no API keys, no LLM, no network calls at all: it reads the local state machine and writes sentences, deterministically.
Good morning. It is Friday, September 4.
Outside it is partly cloudy and 61°F. Today expect sunny skies, a high of
74°F and a low of 55°F.
On the calendar today, 3 items: 8:15 AM — School drop-off; 12:00 PM — Dentist
(Alex); 6:30 PM — Soccer practice.
Alex and Jordan are home; Sam is out.
The garage door is open. The back door is unlocked. 4 lights are on.
Downstairs reads 71°, set to 68°.
Worth a look: Front Door Sensor (8%) — battery needs attention; 2 updates
are waiting.
Have a good morning.
What you get:
- a
household_briefing.generateservice (returns the text as response data, so it pipes straight intonotifyortts.speak) sensor.household_briefingwith the full text in an attribute for dashboards- a
household_briefing_generatedevent so several automations can react to one briefing
Setup is a zero-question config flow; the sections and battery threshold are tunable in Options. Example automations (7 AM to your phone, spoken on a kitchen speaker) are in the repo.

Full disclosure, since this community deserves it straight: we’re the company behind PrivateChief, a managed household AI that runs Home Assistant as its device layer, and this integration is a free, self-hosted version of its morning-briefing feature. The README has the one paragraph about that; the integration itself never advertises, nags, or phones home — and never will.
Feedback and PRs very welcome. If your household’s sentences come out clumsy (odd device names, unusual entity setups), open an issue with the output and we’ll make the composer smarter.
