How I got my Tuya Zigbee scene switch to work with a Tuya gateway Hub

I’m fairly new to this so there may be a different way to do this that is much easier.

Firstly I went on to AliExpress and bought a cheap Zigbee gateway and a cheap scene switch. I still have Tuya cloud in my setup (I’ll get around to looking at that in the future).

After attaching to Tuya on my phone app they appeared in HA but both unsupported. I started reading them and saw that most people go and get a ZHA dongle and connect the zigbee devices to that.

But being stubborn and having what I had I wanted to find another way. I couldn’t figure out how to get any events off of the scene switch device and see them in HA (maybe I missed something).

So what I did was I went over to the tuya development site and created some new virtual devices (basically standard switches) and I added them to my tuya app. Then in the tuya app I added scenes that would fire on the button presses that would basically toggle my virtual switches.

The virtual device shows up in HA so that I can set an automation when they toggle and do whatever I like in the HA world.

Yes this seems ridiculously convoluted and goes through the Tuya cloud.

But it works

The scene controller is a ZigBee device. Ignore Tuya cloud. Go zha or z2m. Way less convoluted.

Doesn’t this require another Zigbee dongle? I had the gateway and didn’t feel like buying another thing

It requires a ZigBee coordinator. You may have to buy one, but home automation is a journey, not a destination.
