How long should a ZWave install take?

I'm trying to add a single ZWave device. More will likely follow, but for now, it's just one.

I started by buying the recommended adaptor,

Went to Devices - Add integration. Searched for ZWave. Selected the first option. Something happened .. didn't pay attention to what.

Now the screen says "Installing app. Installation can take several minutes."

It's been THIRTY minutes and still spinning.

How many minutes are "several" minutes?

Definitely less than 30 minutes! What is the device and does it have an available install Q Code to scan?

It's an August Smart Lock.

But the long delay was just installing the ZWave plugin.

I finally just closed the HA app on my tablet and logged in to HA using my desktop computer.

There, it seems as if everything has installed correctly. SEEMS as if .. I have no good way to check.

My only way of checking is to try to add the lock, as that's my only ZWave device. However, when attempting to do so (using the August app on my tablet), the app IMMEDIATELY reports

In HA, I've tried to add the August device two ways. The first is a scan to auto-magically find it, which fails every time. No surprise, as the August is probably hooped.

The second is to manually input what I THINK is the correct QR code .. a 40 digit number .. but HA tells me that's not a valid QR code. However, I'm not sure what sort of code HA is looking for; I am VERY new to ZWave.

So I'm pretty close to tossing all the August electronics, keeping only the mechanism with gears and motor, then wire up an ESPHome something to control the lock.

Back up a minute. I don't use ZWave, but I know what your issue is.

If you read the Zwave docs (linked in the ZWA-2 docs), it tells you you need 4 things to get Zwave up & running:

  1. a Z-Wave adapter
  2. a Z-Wave server (for example, the Z-Wave JS app (formerly known as an add-on))
  3. the Z-Wave integration
  4. Z-Wave end devices

You seem to have skipped step 3 & only installed the app without installing the integration.
Also, you do not pair the lock using the August app - you pair it via the ZWave integration once it's installed in HA.

Two things.

  1. I've followed the docs and I think I've installed the ZWave integration, LONG delay notwithstanding. See pic below.

  2. I know I don't add a device using the August app alone, but the app is required. Unlike most devices where you press and hold a button, there are no buttons on the August device. You use the app to put the device into "joining" mode. (The app communicates with the device via Bluetooth.)

The August docs are clear enough. In HA, go to Devices, ZWave and click Add Device. Then go to the August app and click Join to Network.
