The energy_period-selector at the top has a nice clean view, unfortunately the NOW button is not working for me.
As I understand it NOW should switch from energy to power, however in my case it’s displaying the cumulative view of the progressed day.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this as intended?
Can this be altered?

No, the “now” button changes the timeframe to include “now”, i.e. it switches to the current day/month/year.
The energy dashboard can only do energy, not power.

There is an open feature request for a power dashboard, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
What makes this a bit complicated is that power and energy sensors are in no way linked to each other in HA. If one device has both an energy and a power sensor, it’s fairly safe to assume that they correspond to each other, but there are devices with 6 of each.
Also, there are devices that only report energy, not power. For them, you could calculate power by taking the change in energy reading over time, but that gets iffy.
And it gets even iffier if you want not just a “now” view, but historic data. Power readings are momentary, they don’t cover any span of time.
My suggestion is to simply build a dashboard to your liking using the power sensors of your devices. If you want some summed up, create a couple of templated helpers for that
